Wisconsin High School Football: Updated AP Rankings

With week one in the books, we get geared up for what should be another crazy, action-packed weekend in Wisconsin. Below are the updated high school AP rankings heading into week two. First place votes are in parentheses, followed by record and finally last week’s rankings. Schools are grouped in three divisions (large, medium and small) based on enrollment size.

LARGE DIVISION (enrollment 900+)

1. Waunakee (8)  1-0   1

2. Hartland Arrowhead (4)  1-0  2

3. Sun Prairie  1-0  4

4. Brookfield Central  1-0  3

5. Sussex Hamilton  1-0  6

6. Marshfield  1-0  7

7. Monona Grove  0-1  10

8. Appleton North  1-0  NR

9. Mequon Homestead  1-0  NR

10. Kimberly  1-0  NR

Color me surprised that Monona Grove not only stayed in the top 10, but moved up three spots despite having a loss! Guess that’s what happens when you give the number one overall team in the state, Waunakee, a run for their money and almost snap a 36-game win streak.

MEDIUM DIVISION (301-899)

1. West De Pere (12)  1-0  1

2. Walworth Big Foot  1-0  2

3. Waukesha Catholic Memorial  1-0  3

4. Wisconsin Lutheran  1-0  7

5. Kewaskum  1-0  4

6. Plymouth  1-0   6

7. Waupaca  1-0  8

8. Pewaukee  1-0  9

9. Brown Deer  1-0  5

10. (tie) Platteville  1-0  NR

10. (tie) Somerset   1-0  NR

The only team to get in the West DePere Phantoms’ way are the Phantoms themselves. West DePere has the second longest active winning streak in Wisconsin (29) and I only see that number climbing as the season goes on. No surprise Wisconsin Lutheran shot up three spots as they look to make it back to Madison again this year.

SMALL DIVISION (300 and lower)

1. Fond du Lac Springs  (12)  1-0  1

2. Edgar  1-0  3

3. Lancaster  1-0  8

4. Eau Claire Regis  1-0  4

5. Colby  1-0  2

6. Stratford  1-0  6

7. Potosi  1-0  5

8. Shiocton  1-0  9

9. Hurley  1-0  10

10. Hilbert  1-0  NR

I don’t know what it is, but these small division schools have me very intrigued. Like I have said before, any team ranked in the top10 could very well be a state champion this year. That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lancaster takes over the top spot later this year, especially if they are able to knock off Platteville later in the season.
