Adrian Maples Shut Down Against Fenton
The 1-1 (0-1) Fenton Tigers scored early and never looked back as they handily defeated the 0-2 Adrian Maples. The Tigers leave Adrian with a 34-6 victory.
Fenton scored early in the first with a pass from their quarterback Connor Davidson to his receiver Mitch Shegos from 10 yards out. They scored again soon after with another pass from Davidson, this time to Damon Thomas for a 12 yard touchdown. The first extra point wasn’t good, but Davidson got it back with a two point conversion run.
Adrian kept Fenton off until the final minute until Davidson threw another touchdown pass to Trent Grimes, this one for 25 yards. The kick this time was good, making the score 21-0.
Fenton scored on their first possession of the third, when Grimes went in on a 16 yard touchdown run. The kick once again failed. They scored again later in the quarter on another Grimes touchdown run from four yards out. That would end the scoring for Fenton on the night as they led 34-0.
There wasn’t much offense in the final quarter of play. Adrian did beat the shut out when they scored within the final minute on a Tony Mendez rush. The kick failed and made the final score 34-6.
Looking at this game from the stat sheet, it is baffling to see that Adrian was defeated as bad as they were. Adrian outrushed Fenton 206 to 157. Fenton did have more total passing yards on fewer attempts and completions–the Tigers had 164 yards to 125. Adrian could move the ball, but mistakes really hurt them. They had five punts, threw an interception and had 15 penalties totaling 105.
Adrian was lead in passing by Hunter Hayes, who completed 13 for 28 passes for 120 yards and an interception. Isaac Gradeless lead the way on the ground with 16 attempts for 98 yards. The leading receiver for the Maples was Michael Hamden, who had two catches for 59 yards, and Josh Perez with six catches that totaled 41 yards.
Fenton’s quarterback Davidson threw 17 passes and completed 11 of them for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Grimes had 18 rushing attempts for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Davidson added 12 runs for 78 yards. Thomas led the team in receiving with four catches that went for 59.
The Adrian defense is going to need to tighten up. The yards they gave up aren’t horrible, but there is room for improvement. They did give up 34 points, which needs to get better, but I think part of that was on the offense for not being able to sustain more drives and put points up, which can be demoralizing.
Their offense definitely needs to get better. They did move the ball, but they couldn’t get into the end zone. They need to cut down on the mistakes if they want to turn their season around and get some wins. I think in doing that, they will get results in more scoring, thus putting them in a better chance in their games.
Adrian next week will travel to play the 2-0 Saline Hornets. Saline traveled to the 0-1 Ypsilanti Phoenix and defeated them by a big margin of 49-14.
Fenton will play at home against conference opponent in the 0-2 (0-2) Holly Broncos. Holly was defeated on the road against the 1-0 (1-0) Linden Eagles by a score of 37-14.
