West Virginia Leads Big 12 Power Poll After Week 1
The Big 12 conference went 9-0 as expected in week 1(TCU was idle). Here is how I rate the teams in the Big 12 power poll headed into the second week.
1) West Virginia- Looks to be in mid season form on offense. Geno Smith was sharp, running game was stout, and the offense ran 101 plays with 6 scoring drives less than two minutes. Defeated Marshall 69-34. Defense is still a question mark.
2)Oklahoma State-84 points is 84 points, regardless of the competition. Jack Pardee gives his approval. Sophomore Desmond Roland from Lake Highlands had 107 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. Beat Savannah State(who?!?) 84 to zip.
3)Oklahoma-Lackluster performance for the Sooners. Had a punt blocked returned for a touchdown, gave up 170+ yards rushing, and had trouble keeping defenders from harassing Landry Jones. The bright spots were JUCO running back Damien Williams who had a 65 yard td scamper, and Kenny Stills who had over 100 yards receiving. The Sooners have had lackluster performances before in openers only to go on and win the Big 12 later in the year. Beat UTEP 24-7.
4)Texas-Decent performance against a probable bowl team in Wyoming. Rushed for over 270 yards, and held the Cowboys to 69 yards on the ground. Sophomore David Ash was solid going 20-27 with a TD, and Brown and Bergeron both topped the 100 yard rushing mark. Defense forced two picks but had a couple of blown assignments including an 82 yard td. Beat Wyoming 37-17
5)Texas Tech-Held opponent to under 100 yards in total offense.Tech had 37 first downs and 500 yards of offense. Backup qb Michael Brewer was spectacular with 2 td’s and 10-13 with 122 yards passing in limited time. Beat Northwestern State 44-6.
6)Baylor-Offense did not miss a beat from last year. Nick Florence had 4 td passes, and the offense piled up 500+ yards and nearly 60 points.Baylor has scored 40 or more points in five consecutive games and has had 500 or more yards of total offense in eight consecutive games.Beat SMU 59-24.
7)Kansas State- Had a 95 yard td run,89 yard punt return for a score, and scored 35 points in the 4th quarter. Junior running back John Hubert led the way with 152 yards on the ground and 6 receptions. Beat Missouri State 51-9.
8)Iowa State-Quarterback Steele Jantz had career highs in completions (32) and passing yards (281).Running back Shontrelle Johnson had a career-high 120 yards rushing. Receiver Chris Young had career highs in receptions (seven) and yards (73).Beat Tulsa 38-23
9)Kansas-Averaged 5.5 yards a rush, blocked two kicks, and scored 24 unanswered points after falling behind 7-0.Defense gave up 411 yards, including 204 on the ground.Beat South Dakota State 31-17.
