Max Browne Shines, Top-ranked QB’s Clash as Skyline (Wa.) Beats Cottonwood (Ut.) 57-25
The visiting Skyline (Wa.) Spartans and top-ranked quarterback Max Browne were unwelcome guests as they demolished the Cottonwood (Ut.) Colts 57-25 on Friday. Browne, who committed to USC in April, faced off against fellow top-ranked quarterback Cooper Bateman, an Alabama commit himself, in a clash of the QB titans.
Browne, a four or five-star recruit depending on who you ask, threw for 387 yards and three touchdowns against a desperate Cottonwood defense. The renowned pocket passer showed flashes of athleticism as he also added a rushing touchdown to his total. His night was highlighted by a 73-yard touchdown pass to possible Colorado or Oregon State wide receiver recruit Nic Sblendorio. The 6-5, 215 pound Browne is ESPN’s 18th ranked recruit nationwide and committed to USC over Alabama, Oklahoma and California, amongst others.
Bateman, the other top-ranked quarterback playing Friday, had a less memorable night for Cottonwood. Despite 254 yards passing and rushing for two touchdowns, the usually risk-free Bateman also threw two interceptions. His first came on Cottonwood’s second possession when he overthrew his target. It was returned 37 yards for a Skyline touchdown. Bateman is Alabama’s top quarterback recruit, but he’ll need a much more consistent effort if he plans on contributing for Nick Saban‘s Crimson Tide. The 6-3, 196 top-ranked quarterback committed to Alabama in May.
Skyline plays host to Couer d’Alene (Id.) next Saturday, while Cottonwood hosts Bingham (Ut.) on Friday.
