The Stanford Cardinal came into the 2012 season looking to replace a huge chunk of their offense that put Palo Alto on the college football map over the last three seasons. Their biggest departure, by far, was quarterback Andrew Luck, but they also had to replace the receiving talents of tight end Coby Fleener and wide receiver Chris Owusu. They’ve had mixed results so far this season, but they’re looking to a brighter future with the commitment of their departed wideout’s little brother, Francis Owusu.
Older brother Chris was a fan-favorite during his time at Stanford. He was one of the few consistent playmakers on the outside at Luck’s disposal and he responded with some very solid seasons, despite what NFL scouts considered a dubious propensity for injury. Despite missing significant time during college, he was a leader of the receiving corps and dangerous weapon in the Cardinal arsenal.
But he may soon be playing second fiddle in Stanford lore to his little brother Francis. Playing out of Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California, the younger Owusu has shown a playmaking ability and versatility that could surpass his older brother and has head coach David Shaw excited about getting him on campus.
The four-star wide receiver prospect has been playing all over the field during his senior season at Oaks Christian. This last weekend, Owusu lined up at running back, wide receiver, safety and punter. He finished the night with 11 catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns on offense while adding a 95-yard pick-six interception for a fourth trip to the endzone.
The young Owusu has a unique ability to change a game whenever he gets a hand on the ball. That versatility will go a long way in making him a success at Stanford and help him propel himself out from big brother’s shadow.
