ACC Football Pick Em' Week 5

Eleven of the 12 teams in the ACC are in action on Saturday (Maryland has a bye week). I did well last week in my picks. I ended up going 8-1 last week–Miami surprised me with their overtime win over Georgia Tech. My record for the season is 35-5 (.875 winning percentage), but I am still looking for the perfect week.

Let’s get to the picks!

Middle Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech

It is hard to figure out the Yellow Jackets this season. They can look dominant (the Virginia game) or look average (Miami and Virginia Tech games). Al Groh’s defense looked overmatched against Miami last weekend, but the triple option offense is still looking solid. Tech will bounce back against the Blue Raiders. Pick: GT over Middle Tennessee

North Carolina State vs. Miami

The Wolf Pack offense appears to finally be fulfilling their preseason  promise. Miami is coming off a huge win over Georgia Tech, but that Hurricane defense is still struggling mightily. Mike Glennon is the best quarterback Miami’s defense has seen since Kansas State’s Collin Klein. Klein absolutely destroyed Miami and I think that Glennon will do the same. Pick: NC State over Miami

Duke vs. Wake Forest

This may be the biggest game that Duke has played since 1994. Wake Forest is a solid team, but their defense showed some major holes last week against Army. The Blue Devils will have the two best players on the field in quarterback Sean Renfree and receiver Conner Vernon. Wake Forest has dominated this rivalry in recent years, but more because of Duke mistakes then outstanding Demon Deacon play. I think Duke will buck the trend this year in an upset. Pick: Duke over WF

Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati

This is technically a home game for the Bearcats, but it is being played at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. Cincinnati is a good team with an excellent pass rush, but the Hokies appear to have finally found their running game. However, Tech running back Tony Gregory won’t be on the sidelines. This game will come down to one simple thing: if the Hokies can run the ball, they will win, but if not, they will lose. I think that Virginia Tech’s running game will continue to improve. Pick: VT over Cincinnati

Clemson vs. Boston College

The Tigers are coming off a heartbreaking loss to Florida State and Clemson’s kryptonite (their defense) reared its ugly head. The Tigers defense will be going up against Chase Rettig, who has been the ACC’s best quarterback early this season. However, I think that Tahj Boyd and Co. will be able to outscore the Eagles. Pick: Clemson over BC

Idaho vs. North Carolina

UNC has been wildly inconsistent this season, but there is no way that the Tar Heels are losing this game. Idaho is 0-4 and just not good. Bryn Renner and Giovani Bernard will have a field day on Saturday.  Pick: UNC over Idaho

Louisiana Tech vs. Virginia

Virginia has looked awful over the past two weeks. The defense wasn’t able to stop either Georgia Tech or TCU and that is a huge problem against LA Tech. If you haven’t been paying attention, the Bulldogs are good–I mean really good. They blew out Illinois in their last game and currently have the third ranked scoring offense in the country (54.7 points per game). This game could turn bad quickly, considering the Cavaliers defensive struggles. Pick: LA Tech over UVa

Florida State vs. South Florida

The Seminoles firmly placed themselves in the national title discussion with their win over Clemson last weekend. However, their vaunted defense showed some weaknesses and gave up 37 points to the Tigers. USF quarterback B.J. Daniels is a major wild card in this one. Daniels could keep this game close on his own, but the Bulls don’t have much of a chance in this one. Pick: FSU over USF
