Rant Sports College Football Upset Alert- Week Six

Kim Klement – US PRESSWIRE

Every Friday, we bring you the Rant Sports College Football Upset Alert, tipping you off to a few games on the Saturday slate that could shake up the landscape.

Here are this week’s upset alert picks:

I think the Texas Tech Red Raiders have an outstanding shot at knocking off the Oklahoma Sooners in Lubbock on Saturday evening. Tech has one of the more surprising defensive units in the country and is facing an Oklahoma team that’s reeling and losing a little faith in Landry Jones, their former Heisman Trophy contending quarterback.

James Gomez agrees, and notes that Tommy Tuberville’s defense could wreak some havoc on a struggling Oklahoma offensive line. Weird things tend to happen on the South Plains when these two meet up, and this certainly won’t be an exception to the rule.

Riley Schmitt thinks the upstart Purdue Boilermakers have a shot at knocking off the Michigan Wolverines at home on Saturday afternoon, in what is arguably the biggest match up between the two teams since 2004. A win by the Boilermakers would set up a gigantic Big 10 match up with the Wisconsin Badgers next weekend which could well have conference championship implications.

Tyler Brett likes the Miami Hurricanes to stun the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Soldier Field in primetime tomorrow evening, pulling off what would be the biggest upset of the weekend in terms of how the teams play out in the rankings. Tyler notes the Irish are on a high after knocking off the Michigan Wolverines last week, and could already be looking ahead to next week’s traditional rivalry match-up with the Stanford Cardinal. Miami has already been written-off by some, but shouldn’t be so easily overlooked, given they have a top-35 ranked offensive unit.

Chris Lionetti and Mike Amato both see the Florida Gators as having what it takes to knock off the visiting LSU Tigers in The Swamp– one of college football’s most raucous environments– in one of two monumental SEC match-ups on Saturday.

Chris notes that Florida signal caller Jeff Driskell has gotten better weekly and won’t see anything new from an LSU defense this season from last. Mike notes that LSU hasn’t looked as dominant recently, and yet-to-be-proven LSU QB Zach Mettenberger will be facing an amped up Florida defense that’s looking to make a point and lead the Gators to an upset.

Shannon Smallwood likes the Arizona Wildcats to knock off the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday afternoon in Palo Alto. David LaRose agrees with Shannon, and notes the Cardinal seem a little fragile right now, and there have even been quarterback rumors surfacing this week after last week’s shaky performance by incumbent starter Josh Nunes. Rich Rodriguez will have his troops focused after back-to-back losses and an Arizona win will prevent a third.

Justine Hendricks likes the Utah State Aggies to knock off the BYU Cougars in Provo on Friday evening. The Aggies made this match-up a close one, and they’ll be prepared for whomever the Cougars trot out under center, whether it be Riley Nelson or Taysom Hill. BYU won big last week over Hawaii, but this is a much improved Utah State team that will give them all they can handle.

To round things out, Chris Hengst sees the Iowa State Cyclones knocking off a shell-shocked TCU Horned Frogs team on Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth. TCU suspended quarterback Casey Pachall indefinitely due to a DWI arrest, and will turn to red-shirt freshman Trevone Boykin, who is much more dual-threat than passing threat. The top-20 Cyclones defense will give Boykin all he can handle and walk away from Amon G. Carter Stadium with a win.

Enjoy the games and always make sure to check back every Friday for the Rant Sports College Football Weekly Upset Alert!
