Woody's Log: Questions Need Answers in Week 6 of ACC Football Action

Woody's Log

The ACC Football schedule is in full swing with five conference battles here in Week 6.

No more of these Idaho Potato Festival Club Teams or Florida Retiree Rattlers Square Dancing Clubs.

But despite the cupcakes being gone, so many team still have so many questions that need answers.

How good are the Duke Blue Devils?

Who is worse on defense… the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets or the North Carolina State Wolfpack?

How good are the Clemson Tigers?

Who actually is injured and healthy with the North Carolina Tar Heels? But that is really an every week event to look forward too.

The Miami Hurricanes battle against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is definitely the highlight of the week. It's nice to have both teams with some relevance for a change. All that is needed is Jimmy Johnson and Lou Holtz back. Now that would be epic and would resurrect some tremendous memories.

What do you think ole Jimmy's hair stylist is up to these days? Do you think he took him or her with him to the TV studio? This question maybe the biggest one of the week that needs to be answered.

Let's just hope that Miami and all of the ACC can deliver on the challenge to wow the nation in Week 6. How amazing would it be for the current ACC team to give the future ACC team all it could handle?

Woody is still struggling on the picks with a sub-par 5-3 mark in Week 5 to move to 29-18-1 on the season.

Let’s see if this baby can get turned around with some real ACC head-to-head action with Woody’s Log for Week 6!

Boston College Eagles @ Army Black Knights (+9.5)

Boston College Eagles @ Army Black Knights (+9.5)

Noon – CBS Sports Network

XM 190 – SIRIUS 112

There are very few teams that need a bigger win than the Boston College Eagles. Boston College is a solid team with the best passing offense in the ACC. The Army Black Knights spread triple option will give the Eagles a bit of a problem on D, but Boston College will prevail and cover, 44-17.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ North Carolina Tar Heels (-6)

Virginia Tech Hokies @ North Carolina Tar Heels (-6)

12:30 p.m. – ACC Network

XM 193 – SIRIUS 136

Every bone in ole Woody’s body is screaming “the North Carolina Tar Heels are ready to make a statement!” Carolina is as stead as you can get on both sides of the ball right now in the ACC, while the Virginia Tech Hokies are about as inconsistent as the league has. The game is in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and all the signs are leading to a big day for the Tar Heels. But, it’s so hard to bet against the Hokies especially after they lost last week. ARRRGGGHHH! Carolina wins and covers, 40-14.

Virginia Cavalier @ Duke Blue Devils (-1.5)

Virginia Cavaliers @ Duke Blue Devils (-1.5)

3 p.m. – Fox Sports Regional Networks

XM 192 – SIRIUS 134

Does anyone really know who these two teams really are? There were a lot of hype and high hopes for the Virginia Cavaliers entering the season. The Cavaliers have not lived up to that hype. On the reverse side of the story, nothing was expected of the Duke Blue Devils and they are sitting at 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic Division. It’s basically a pick-em game with Duke giving a point and a half. This looks to be a fun high scoring game. Virginia gets back on track and wins this one 38-34.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets @ Clemson Tigers (-10)

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets @ Clemson Tigers (-10)

3:30 p.m. – ESPN

XM 85 – SIRIUS 85

A lot of coaches in prepping for a team will look at its opponents last two efforts. If that’s the case, the Clemson Tigers better go back about 4 because the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have been a dumpster fire in its past two games. It is very interesting that Las Vegas and the Sports Books still have this game with Tech getting 10 points on the road. That should tell you that no one believe Georgia Tech is really this bad on defense and that those same folks still have huge doubts in Clemson’s defense. With that being said, it would be fun to say Clemson wins 12-0 on field goals. But, this game will have some offense from both teams and Georgia Tech’s track record of stopping teams is way worse than Clemson’s. The Tigers win and cover, 44-28, and Al Groh is not allowed back on the Jackets’ team bus to Atlanta, Georgia.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons @ Maryland Terrapins (-6)

Wake Forest Demon Deacons @ Maryland Terrapins (-6)

3:30 p.m. – ESPNU

XM 190 – SIRIUS 112

(crickets) Hmmmmmm. (crickets) The Maryland Terrapins had an extra week to prepare for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Wake is going to be without their best player on offense in Michael Campanaro and on defense in Nikita Whitlock. Maryland has the second best defense in all of the ACC. Maryland wins this one, 20-14.

Miami Hurricanes vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-13.5)

Miami Hurricanes vs. Norte Dame Fighting Irish (-13.5)

7:30 p.m. – NBC

XM 192 – SIRIUS 134

It isn’t the “Convicts vs Catholics” that the Gen X and Y kids grew up with but it’s still a relevant game on national TV for the ACC. The game is technically on a neutral field in Chicago, Illinois, but that just means more room for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans. The Miami Hurricanes have a very interesting and young team that can give the Irish all it will be able to handle. Notre Dame will win, but not cover, 33-30.

Florida State Seminoles at North Carolina State Wolfpack (+16)

No. 3 Florida State Seminoles @ North Carolina State Wolfpack (+16)

8 p.m. – ESPN2

XM 190 – SIRIUS 112

The North Carolina State Wolfpack needs a quality game to hang their hat on for the rest of the season. Something to build on. Something to possibly save Head Coach Tom O’Brien’s job. Well, that game is not this one. The Florida State Seminoles looked normal last week and needs to keep pushing to be considered “elite” in the nations eyes. NC State may keep things close or have the lead early or through the half, but that is it. The ‘Noles win and cover, 44-20.
