NFL and Others May Come Knocking, Saban Likely to Stay in Tuscaloosa
Thursday morning a report surfaced that new Cleveland Browns owner and University of Tennessee alum Jimmy Haslam could make an inquiry to gauge the interest of the University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
While the report was later refuted by the originating station, it raised the question: Would Saban ever make a return to the National Football League? Some said he would be smart to leave to maximize his earning power in the waning years of his career. Others said he would be smart to finish out his career in Tuscaloosa.
When Saban left the Miami Dolphins after two seasons, the consensus was that proverbial door to the NFL had , but with every Alabama win, the interest from NFL teams becomes just a bit greater. While the door for a return may be opening, Saban may have closed it.
Saban will turn 61 in just a few days (October 31st to be exact), and as he gets up there in years, one would have to think that he is past the days of being a vagabond coach. Nearly six years ago he accepted the challenge of taking a struggling Alabama program and rebuilding it. Now, the challenge may not be building up another program or team, but maintaining the level of success he has had.
John Wooden once said “Perfection is what you are striving for, but perfection is an impossibility. However, striving for perfection is not an impossibility.” Listen to a press conference with Nick Saban or any one his players-the pursuit for perfection is evident; they seem to be on the constant quest to play the perfect game.
As far as his legacy? Unless he could win 4 Super Bowls in 4 years, Saban will always be known as a college coach. The smart move would be to further cement his legacy as one of the greatest college coaches of all time on one of the biggest platforms in the collegiate game in Tuscaloosa.
The rumors will likely never stop; Saban will be linked to (insert high profile opening here) sooner than later. However, the only rumor to pay attention to is if you hear he’s interested in spending more time at the lake.
