The No. 14 Florida State Seminoles suffered a huge blow on Saturday in their win against the Miami Hurricanes. Running back Chris Thompson tore his ACL at the end of a 32-yard reception in the second quarter and will be out for the rest of the season.

It’s a big loss for the 7-1 Seminoles. Thompson was having a great season this year and continued to inch closer towards 1,000 yards for the season. He left the game 313 yards shy of becoming the first running back at FSU to rush for 1,000 yards in a season since 1996, when Warrick Dunn did it.

Thompson seemed to be the difference maker the Noles needed on offense to win the ACC and contend for a BCS game. He had the speed and the shiftiness to out run defenders and take it to the endzone on any play he touched the ball.

As he left the game, the rest of the Noles running backs took a sign of solidarity for Thompson. At halftime, they wrote in black ink “C.T. 4” on the white tape on their wristbands. It shows you just how much he meant to them as a player and as a teammate.

Thompson has dealt with injuries during most of his career, most notably in the past two seasons.

FSU’s backfield is going to have to step up to fill the void left by Thompson. Coach Jimbo Fisher says they will take the same approach in their running game for the rest of the season.

That may be hard to do after losing a player like Thompson.
