Oklahoma Sooners Hosting College GameDay

In what really isn’t a surprise, ESPN’s College GameDay crew is headed to Norman, Oklahoma to feature the top 10 match-up against the Oklahoma Sooners and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The undefeated Irish haven’t made the trip to Norman since 1966. A Sooners game has been featured on College GameDay 27 times; only Ohio State and Florida have more appearances on the show. This will be the seventh time the Sooners have hosted the GameDay crew and they are 5-1 out of those appearances.

The last time they hosted a home game visit was against Texas Tech in 2008. Big XII fans remember 2008 all too well; there was a 3-way tie for the Big XII South Champions. That game will forever be known as the “Jump Around” game, where the Red Raiders had just come off their shocking win over the Texas Longhorns. Tech got manhandled by the Sooners, 65-21.

Other GameDay visits the Sooners hosted:

October 2007 – (6) Oklahoma 41 – (11) Missouri 31

November 2003 – (1) Oklahoma 52 – (14) Oklahoma State 9

September 2001 – (3) Oklahoma 38 – Kansas State 37

October 2000 – (3) Oklahoma 31 – (1) Nebraska 14

September 1995 – (10) Oklahoma 17 – (4) Colorado 38

The Sooners are sitting at an atrocious 1-8 record all time against the Irish. The last time these two teams met was in 1999, Bob Stoops first year at the program. Stoops tells it that they had the lead 30-14 going into the third quarter and he noticed the players were laughing and giggling. He said he quickly knew that this team had a long way to go. The Irish did come back and win the game 34-30, but after having 5-straight seasons of losing, the Sooners were starting to believe they can actually turn things around.

The following year proved just that.
