Every week our staff of college football writers at Rant Sports brings you their upset picks for the upcoming weekend’s games.
Here are the picks for Week Nine from several of our team:
Chris Lionetti is picking the Georgia Bulldogs to knock off the Florida Gators in the Swamp on Saturday afternoon. On paper, Georgia is the more talented of the two teams, and has had increased intensity in practice lately, which will have them prepared for Will Muschamp‘s squad. Georgia has a chip on their shoulder and will arrive in Jacksonville with guns blazing.
Connor Muldowney has the Penn State Nittany Lions handing the Ohio State Buckeyes the first loss of the 2012 season on Saturday evening in State College. Coming off a big win over the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Lions are the hottest team in the Big 10 and will be facing off against a Buckeyes squad that is due to lose a close game after several near misses.
James Gomez sees the Tennessee Volunteers picking up a victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday morning in Columbia. Tennessee is one of the most desperate teams in the country at this point in the season, and will look to take advantage of key Carolina injuries on both sides of the ball. This type of game is a dream for Vols gunslinger Tyler Bray, and he should be on tap to have one of his best games this year.
Shannon Smallwood believes, as do I, that the Arizona Wildcats will knock off the USC Trojans on Saturday afternoon in Tucson. Rich Rodriguez desperately needs a signature win to ensure his long term future with the Wildcats and Lane Kiffin has a tendency to lose games of this magnitude. While Arizona might not be the most daunting opponent on the USC schedule, they certainly shouldn’t be overlooked.
Tyler Brett and David Larose both agree that the Washington Huskies will topple the Oregon State Beavers, damaging what hopes remain for Mike Riley‘s squad to make a National Championship run. Oregon State is built in much the same fashion as the Stanford Cardinal, a team Washington traditionally matches up well against. If Beavers QB Sean Mannion was rushed back from his knee injury, the Beavers will be in for a long, late night in Seattle.
Mike Atkinson sees the Cincinnati Bearcats picking up a win over the teetering Louisville Cardinals. Cincy QB Munchie Legaux— everyone’s favorite all-name teamer– is just too talented for the Cardinals to stop and should have a field day on Saturday. Along with this, the Cardinals defense hasn’t really played a stout opponent yet, and will get all they can handle from the Bearcats.
Patrick Schmidt is picking the Kent State Flashes to hand the Rutgers Scarlet Knights their first loss of 2012 and put a dent in their BCS hopes. Kent is a typical high-octane MAC-tion style offense that will look to accelerate the pace early and keep it that way throughout. If Rutgers is unable to establish the run game with their star RB Jawan Jamison, the Flashes will depart New Jersey with a first-tier victory.
Justine Hendricks sees Frank Spaziani’s Boston College Eagles pulling off a win over the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, granting him at least a temporary stay of execution. Maryland is down to the third QB on the depth chart which levels the playing field with the Eagles, and should allow BC to come up with a few big turnovers which will ultimately be the difference in the game.
