It’s hard to believe that it is already week 10 in the college football season. It seems like just yesterday I was watching July baseball in 80 degree weather. Now, there’s snow on the ground, a chill in the air and conference football games with BCS implications.
The Big 12 currently has six ranked teams out of the ten in the conference. There is never an easy week for a Big 12 team in conference play. This week features a number of big games within the conference headlined, in my opinion, by the #2 Kansas State Wildcats playing a home game against the #24 Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Other games featuring ranked teams this weekend include the #12 Oklahoma Sooners traveling to face the Iowa State Cyclones, a team that has a history of catching ranked teams off guard, and the #23 Texas Longhorns heading to Lubbock to face the #18 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Another game that catches my eye is the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs traveling to Morgantown to take on a #21 West Virginia Mountaineers team desperate for a win after losing two straight conference games.
Now, my predictions for each game.
#12 Oklahoma at Iowa St.
I see this game being slightly closer than people expect, but the Sooners will still win. Ames, Iowa can be a weird environment to play in this time of year, and I think that plays to Iowa State. However, Oklahoma is an experienced football team that has been here before, quite literally. Oklahoma wins 35-21.
TCU at #21 WVU
Note: I will write an in-depth preview of this game within the next few days, so if you’re interested in this game, be looking for that. West Virginia needs a win here to save its season. There’s not much more to it than that. I think they get the job done, taking advantage of a weaker defense than they’ve faced in the last few weeks. Also, I predict TCU’s backup QB will throw for 400+ yards on the weak Mountaineer defense. He will be outscored by Geno Smith and the WVU offense. WVU wins 42-35.
Kansas at Baylor
1-7 Kansas travels to face a Baylor team that was ranked at one point in the season. After hanging with a struggling Texas team, I still see Kansas losing big 42-7.
#23 Texas at #18 Texas Tech
Texas has struggled the last few weeks, after coming off of consecutive losses to West Virginia and Oklahoma. They squeaked by Baylor, who is now unranked, and barely beat 1-7 Kansas last week.
I think Texas loses this one to a much more consistent Texas Tech team 28-14.
#24 Oklahoma St. at #2 Kansas St.
Finally, what I consider the Big 12 game of the week.
Kansas State looks good, I mean really good. Colin Klein is overrated in my opinion, but the team is still great. I think Kansas State is a team that could potentially beat the mighty Alabama Crimson Tide in a national championship. The defense is there, the offense is there, and the special teams are there. Also, they have a great home field advantage.
Oklahoma State doesn’t stand a chance in this game. I see Kansas State winning big. Oklahoma State is a good football team, but not good enough to slow down Kansas State. Kansas State wins in a blowout 49-14.
