The BCS National Championship Contender’s Guide to Rooting For Others (Week 10)
The college football world finds itself with a hot debate already brewing regarding the BCS National Championship. If the Alabama Crimson Tide rolls and three undefeated teams are left to choose from, which should be chosen to take them on between the Oregon Ducks, Kansas State Wildcats and Notre Dame Fighting Irish?
There’s a very real possibility that this problem may sort itself out. Just to be sure that these three fan bases – or those who would like to see a particular matchup – are picking the correct ponies to back this weekend, here’s a guide to the best choices to root for and what purpose their victories would serve.
Pittsburgh Panthers - Gives Notre Dame a loss
Oklahoma State Cowboys - Gives Kansas State a loss
Iowa State Cyclones – Suddenly, some of the the luster of last week’s Notre Dame victory dulls
Texas Longhorns - Makes KSU’s win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders last week look less impressive
TCU Horned Frogs - Could take down the West Virginia Mountaineers that already lost to both Texas Tech and KSU making all three look weaker in the process
Nebraska Cornhuskers - The Michigan State Spartans, Notre Dame’s first perceived quality win, would drop to 5-5
Pittsburgh Panthers – Gives Notre Dame a loss
USC Trojans – Gives Oregon a loss
Texas Tech – Makes last week’s win look even better
West Virginia – For the WVU win to come across as impressive, the Mountaineers need to halt their two-game losing skid
UCLA Bruins – Oregon’s strength of schedule takes a hit; drops the No. 22 Arizona Wildcats from the polls
California Golden Bears – Another strength of schedule hit; drops the No. 23 Washington Huskies from the polls
Arizona State Sun Devils – Yet another schedule strength hit for the Ducks and drops the impact of the Civil War
Nebraska – MSU’s record drops to 5-5
Oklahoma State – Gives Kansas State a loss
USC – Gives Oregon a loss; gives USC a boost – a win-win
Iowa State – Weakens KSU’s win over Oklahoma
TCU – Aforementioned West Virginia and Texas Tech wins by KSU look worse
UCLA, California, Arizona State: All strength of schedule damage to Oregon
Oklahoma (Big) – A sizable win following their loss to the Irish may allow for a slight bump in the polls
Wake Forest Demon Deacons – Plays the Boston College Eagles, another Notre Dame foe, but the Demon Deacons have a better shot at the more impressive record between the two schools when lining up against the Irish.
There’s no such thing as too much college football. For these three schools and their fans, here’s hoping they’ve got all necessary sports packages and tailgate setups. They’re one or two plays away from being an undisputed pick for the BCS Championship Game.
