The Duke Blue Devils have been the best story in the ACC this season. They started out the season 6-2 and all but assured themselves their first bowl appearance since 1994. However, the wheels have fallen off the past two weeks.
Duke has been blown out by their last two opponents. Although, no one could blame them since their opponents were Florida State and Clemson. The two losses give Duke a 6-4 record for the season, but can the Blue Devils win again this year?
The Blue Devils’ remaining two games are far from easy. This Saturday they will travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets have struggled this season, but with a 4-5 record they are fighting to save their season and keep their bowl streak alive. The Jackets simply dismantled Maryland in their last game. The final score was 33-13, but that score is a bit deceiving. Maryland scored a meaningless touchdown as time expired. Duke has a better offense than Maryland, and if the Devils can slow down GT’s triple option offense then they could pull out the road victory.
Duke’s final game is against the 5-4 Miami Hurricanes. Don’t fool yourself, this game is important. If Duke is able to defeat Georgia Tech next week, then their matchup with the Hurricanes in the final week of the season will be for the Coastal Division. I know it seems crazy, but Duke could represent the Coastal in the ACC Championship game on December 1st.
Despite the fact that Duke is already bowl eligible, they still have a lot to play for. If the Blue Devils can pull off the impossible and defeat both Georgia Tech and Miami, they would likely meet Florida State in the ACC Championship game. Duke won’t win the championship even if they get there, but just getting there would make them the biggest story in college football this year.
