ACC Football Week 12 Pick Em’

Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

My picks haven’t been panning out as I would like the past few weeks, and my winning percentage for the season is falling. However, one good week and I’m right back in the groove. I went 3-3 last week with my picks making my record for the season 63-21 (.750 winning percentage). All 12 ACC teams are in action this week, so there will be plenty of good football to watch on both Thursday and Saturday.

Let’s get to the picks!

North Carolina vs. Virginia

Both of these teams are on short weeks. The Cavaliers have rebounded from a six game losing streak to win their last two contests, while North Carolina is coming off a shootout loss to Georgia Tech. It’s simple, if Virginia wins then they will keep their bowl hopes alive but if they lose then that dream is dashed. The Cavaliers have played a lot better football as of late, but North Carolina is a better team overall so I will pick the Tar Heels to win on the road. Pick: UNC over UVa

Florida State vs. Maryland

This is a must win game for the Seminoles against an injury-depleted Maryland team. If the Seminoles win then they have secured the Atlantic Division crown, but if they lose then it will open up the door for Clemson. FSU got lucky last week when they beat Virginia Tech, but they are still the best team in the ACC. I just don’t see a way that Maryland can upset the Seminoles with a linebacker playing quarterback. Pick: FSU over Maryland

Virginia Tech vs. Boston College

Let’s get this out of the way up front; Boston College is bad, like historically bad. It is unlikely that head coach Frank Spaziani will be brought back again next year. Virginia Tech is now in do-or-die mode because of their 4-6 record. If the Hokies lose again then the 19-year bowl streak is over. This isn’t a good combination for the Eagles come Saturday. Tech will do everything they can to win this game against a bad team. This game could turn out ugly. Pick: VT over BC

South Florida vs. Miami

What are the Hurricanes? Are they the team that held Virginia Tech to 12 points or the one that gave up a lead to Virginia with six seconds left in the game? Miami’s inconsistency has been a problem all year, but the Hurricanes have shown that they can score with anyone. They have a good shot at winning this game against a 3-6 Big East team. Pick: Miami over USF

Duke vs. Georgia Tech

Both of these teams have a real chance to win the Coastal Division, so this will be a hard fought game. However, Georgia Tech is fighting to continue their bowl streak and a win over the Blue Devils will ensure their passage into postseason play. This will be a high scoring game, although I doubt it will be quite as high as the Yellow Jackets historically high scoring affair last week against North Carolina. This game is in Atlanta so I’ll take the Jackets. Pick: GT over Duke

Wake Forest vs. Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish are trying to keep their BCS title hopes alive, while Wake Forest is trying to get to a bowl game. Like most Notre Dame games as of late this will be a low scoring game. The Irish will get into the end zone a few times and that should be enough. The Demon Deacons just won’t be able to score enough points against a very good Notre Dame defense. Pick: ND over WF

North Carolina State vs. Clemson

State finally rebounded last week with a big win over Wake Forest, but the Wolfpack can’t celebrate much longer as they have to travel into Death Valley. NC State has a tendency to beat either Florida State or Clemson each year, and they have already beaten FSU. It is doubtful that Mike Glennon can keep up pace with Tajh Boyd on the road, so I will take Clemson in this one. Pick: Clemson over NC State
