Every week, the staff of college football writers here at Rant Sports pool their collective knowledge and try and pick the upsets of the week.
Here are the picks for Week Twelve from several of our team:
Mike Atkinson is picking the Kansas Jayhawks to rise up and get a win over the Iowa State Cyclones. Kansas has looked strong in close losses to the TCU Horned Frogs and Texas Longhorns, so they are ready to break through in one of these games. They’ll have added incentive to play the spoiler as Iowa State needs one more win to become bowl-eligible.
Connor Muldowney likes the Wisconsin Badgers to spoil the perfect season of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Connor doesn’t think the Badgers are going to let another team march into Camp Randall and steal a win. They’ll turn to Montee Ball and the Wisconsin running game to overpower the Buckeyes.
James Gomez sees the Kansas State Wildcats stumbling in Waco against the Baylor Bears. Nick Florence leads a potent passing attack and the Bears are overflowing with talented wide receivers who can put up points in bushels. The Wildcats are not healthy as Collin Klein is getting worn down from a season’s worth of hits and star receiver Tyler Lockett is questionable along with defensive back Ty Zimmerman. The Cats are too dinged up to hang with Baylor, thinks James, and K-State loses it late with a costly turnover.
Mike Amato is looking towards the Big East this week and is picking the Cincinnati Bearcats to upend the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Cincy has been tested this season with a close loss against the Louisville Cardinals and a win over the Syracuse Orange. The Bearcats also boast the best rushing attack in the conference and Rutgers may be without their top running back, Jawan Jamison, who is questionable with a sprained ankle.
Patrick Schmidt feels the Tennessee Volunteers will circle the wagons this week against the Vanderbilt Commodores and win one for their embattled coach Derek Dooley. Tyler Bray, who is one of the leading passers in the country in terms of yardage, will have another big day, but he’ll avoid the “mind-numbing” turnover this time, says Patrick, and the Vols will pull off the minor upset.
Finally, Shannon Smallwood, Zach Pugh and others think the Stanford Cardinal are poised to upset the Oregon Ducks in what looks like the game of the week. Stanford boasts the best rush defense in the country, allowing less than 60 yards per game, and has a front seven that is more physical than anything Oregon has faced all season. On offense, the Cardinal can use their big offensive line and running back Stepfan Taylor to take advantage of a dinged up Oregon front and control the clock, avoid big mistakes and escape Autzen Stadium with a win.
