When Virginia Tech takes the field on Saturday to take on Boston College there will be two new starting wide receivers. Marcus Davis and Dyrell Roberts have been the starters for most of the season, but in an attempt to refocus the receiving corps as a whole those duties will fall to Corey Fuller and Demitri Knowles.
Both Fuller and Knowles have been pleasant surprises this year. Fuller leads the team in touchdown receptions (5) and is second on the team in both receptions and receiving yards. Knowles is a true freshman that has shown himself to be a deep threat. He has caught 13 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown this season.
However, this move may be more of a punishment for Roberts and Davis (particularly Davis) rather than a reward for Fuller and Knowles. Both Roberts and Davis have had on-field issues this season. Roberts has had some dropped passes that have dearly hurt the Hokies, but the knock on Davis is far more disturbing.
Davis leads the team in receptions and receiving yards, but this past week a viral video has surfaced showing the receiver not making an effort to run block during the Florida State game. Virginia Tech has always been a running team and the receivers have always been a large part of that, but the video of Davis shows a lack of effort that hurt his entire team.
The move appears to simply be a move to light a fire under Davis and Roberts. Both of them will be on the field plenty on Saturday, but if this plan does work then it will be well worth it. Something needs to change if the Hokies are to save their season and it appears that the coaching staff hopes that this is the one that will do it.
