ACC Football: The Demise of the ACC is Greatly Exaggerated

Sam Sharpe-US PRESSWIRE

OK everybody…

Let’s take a big, deep breath…

(exhales)

The sun did come up this morning despite the loss of the Maryland Terrapins to the Big 10.

So what if they were a founding member back in 1953…

Who cares about the rivalries…

The honest fact is Maryland had become fiscally inept, was staring a $17 million deficit in the face over the next five years and needed someone to bail the university out.

The Terps simply couldn’t afford to stay in the ACC

And it is pretty clear the ACC had reached a point where it no longer felt Maryland was important to the future of the conference.

So for everyone who has the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles jumping ship as soon as it can and the only teams the ACC can court are the South Florida Bulls, let’s pump the brakes…

Truth be told, the ACC is set up perfectly to contended for years to come.

In fact, with the addition of the Top-Ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the conference is ahead of the curve in the new Plus One Playoff system that will begin next year.

The Irish, even though they are not officially a part of the ACC, will have a huge impact the strength of the conference with its five game schedule.

Add to the mix the Seminoles and the 11th-ranked Clemson Tigers who have built programs that will compete and be viable year in and year out and the ACC can see a bright future.

These three teams alone could get two teams into the final four…

That is something no other conference will be able to do with the new format.

But the important thing here is not the potential future or the addition of the Connecticut Huskies or the Louisville Cardinals to save the conference…

That is laughable in its own right…

Its simply a wake-up call to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Miami Hurricanes, North Carolina Tar Heels, Virginia Tech Hokies, North Carolina State Wolfpack and the Virginia Cavaliers to cut the crap and play big-boy College Football.

The Duke Blue Devils, Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Boston College Eagles just need to be consistent and win non-conference games they should and play well in the ones they shouldn’t.

In short, step it up…

No more academic scandals, boosters paying for hookers, blow-outs against Top-25 Teams or whining about getting no respect.

Just grow a set, line-up, hit hard and have some stinking school and conference pride…

No one wants to be bought and that is exactly what happened to Maryland…

So remember…

There are somethings the ACC needs to do better for sure…

But this story is about the financial collapse of the Terps and the Big 10 buying them…

The ACC is strong…

In fact, it might even be stronger without Maryland and is set up for success for years to come…
