All But One Big 12 Team Is Now Bowl Eligible

My, how the tables have turned. Just a couple of weeks ago, many people, including myself were doubtful that the Big 12 Conference was going to be able to fill all of its bowl obligations. Looking at the standings now, every team minus the Kansas Jayhawks are going bowling.

The Baylor Bears secured their bowl berth on Saturday, beating the Texas Tech Red Raiders in OT. The Bears surprised everyone by beating the Kansas State Wildcats two weekends ago and only needed one more win to push them into bowl eligibility. Their momentum carried over into the Tech game. They still would have had another shot, since they play the Oklahoma State Cowboys next Saturday, but now, some of the pressure is off for that game.

The Iowa State Cyclones became bowl eligible last weekend against the Jayhawks, which is a good thing considering they played and lost their last final game of the season on Friday against the West Virginia Mountaineers, which was also the game that the Mountaineers clenched their bowl bid with.

Even though it is Championship week next weekend for the other conferences, the Big 12 still has conference games to play.

The Mountaineers will take on the Jayhawks (1-10) with the hopes to bring their season ending record to 7-5. The Cowboys (7-4) travel to Waco to take on the Bears (6-5). The Oklahoma Sooners (9-2) will travel to Fort Worth to play the TCU Horned Frogs  (7-4). If the Texas Longhorns (8-3) can pull the upset over the Wildcats (10-1) then the Sooners will win the Big 12, but only if the Sooners can put the Frogs away.

The Big 12 has been a boat race this season, and it appears it’s also going to end that way. What a year.
