Tim Beckman: First Season At Illinois A Disaster

David Banks-US PRESSWIRE

As if Tim Beckman needed anymore bad publicity on his resume. He managed to add one more bullet point on Saturday when Illinois finished out their season at Northwestern, getting throttled 50-14.

Beckman was penalized for getting in an official’s way on the sideline in the second quarter against the Wildcats. The man who Illinois picked to get the football program out of the gutter could be seen falling to the turf after the official bulldozed him over while running to keep up with the play.

Beckman was penalized twice for this on Saturday, not something the Fighting Illini needed as they were already having trouble slowing down Northwestern’s offense.

His first season in Champaign has been absolutely embarrassing and his behavior on the sideline hasn’t been much better. We all remember when Beckman was reprimanded for having chewing tobacco in his mouth during a game earlier this season. None of this has helped him win over the fan base which is dwindling by the minute.

If you’re Athletic Director Mike Thomas, you have to have serious doubts whether this was a smart hire. He continues to hide how he feels by preaching about how difficult the rebuilding process is and it will take some time for Beckman to get it back up to where it needs to be.

After finishing the season 2-10 and winless in conference play on Saturday, Beckman continued to use his favorite phrase that’s become well-known at Illinois this season: WE’LL CONTINUE TO EVALUATE.

Not much too evaluate anymore, Tim. Just look at your record.
