College Football Rumors: Texas Tech To Buyout Art Briles’ Contract?
The internet is spinning with rumors on Sunday of the who, what, when and why of Texas Tech‘s surprise search for a new head coach. While I personally think they should attempt a run at Kliff Kingsbury, at lot of people have been throwing out some great names. And according to some, the school is actually ponying up the money for a big one.
Art Briles, the current head coach of the Baylor Bears, who signed an extension just last week to stay in Waco, is said by this source to be the front runner at the moment.
Jones, whose twitter profile states that he is a CBS Sports Network College Football Analyst is saying this about this situation. It does certainly make sense that Tech would go after Briles, considering that is his alma mater and he did have a clause in his contract stating the only school he would leave for would be Tech. I’m not certain that the clause is still in the contract but at one point, it was there.
Briles was once a coach for the Red Raiders, having coached the running backs from 2000-2002. He helped improve their running game average from 66 yards per game to almost 100 yards per game. Before his arrival in Waco in 2007, the Bears had only won 11 Big 12 games in 12 seasons. The Bears are now considered a trap game for opponents and house one of the most explosive offenses in the Nation.
There hasn’t been any word out of Waco yet that proves that this rumor actually has legs to it, but the Red Raiders have gone after Briles before; when Mike Leach was dismissed from the team.
Kirby Hocutt, the Tech athletic director, stated on Saturday that they were looking for a replacement that understood West Texas and was loyal to University.
Briles is both of those.
