College Football Rumors: Clemson OC Chad Morris to Texas Tech?

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Since Tommy Tuberville’s resignation as head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders last week, rumors began to fly on who his replacement could be.

Lubbock media and TTU fans seem to have narrowed athletic director Kirby Hocutt’s list down to former Red Raiders’ QB, and current Texas A&M Aggies offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, and Clemson Tigers OC Chad Morris. Morris was also the target of the University of South Florida Bulls after Skip Holtz was fired earlier this month.

It was confirmed today through several outlets that Morris was in Lubbock interviewing with Hocutt, and while he has no career ties to Tech, Morris was the head coach of several successful high school football teams in Texas from 1994-2009, with a record of 169 wins, 38 losses, and back-to-back, 16-0 state title seasons at Lake Travis High School in Austin, TX. In 2010, he accepted the offensive coordinator position at Tulsa, moving to Clemson a year later.

This season, the Tigers finished with a No.14 ranking, 10-2 overall, and 7-1 in the ACC. Under Morris, Clemson has established an intimidating, and explosive No.6 ranked offense averaging 42.4 points per game, and 518.3 yards of total offense, while scoring at least 37 points in 10 of 12 games this season.

It should be noted that Texas Tech quarterback Michael Brewer was the starter as a junior at Lake Travis in 2009 – Morris’ final season as the Cavaliers head coach, and his second straight state title year.

In Brewer’s junior year under Morris, the dual threat QB threw for 4,450 yards, and 43 touchdowns, with 114 carries for 615 yards, and 23 TD’s rushing.

While current Tech gunslinger Seth Doege is headed to the NFL after the Texas Bowl, there is familiar depth on the Red Raiders roster that Morris had a hand in developing. This could help push the decision in Tech’s favor, but like all rumors, we’ll see what happens.
