Tucker is tied to the Badgers in several ways. As a player for Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez in the mid 1990s, Tucker has an extensive coaching background at multiple first-tier programs as a coordinator and positional coach including stints at Michigan State, LSU and Ohio State as well as his time in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and most recently, Jacksonville.
While Tucker initially denied any interest in the Wisconsin opening, it has been reported he has shown interest in discussing the opening with the school more recently.
Currently the interim head coach in Jacksonville due to the absence of head coach Mike Mularkey due to illness, it’s likely Tucker could receive interest from Jaguars head coach Shahid Khan in the off-season to take over as the head coach in Jacksonville.
This element alone could be enough to keep Tucker at arms-length from the Wisconsin job, but you have to figure that the opportunity to coach at one’s alma mater is plenty attractive, especially if the opportunity would allow Tucker to be reunited with his former coach and current athletic director in Alvarez.
Have the Wisconsin Badgers found their man in Mel Tucker?
There’s little time to be wasted with the recruiting dead period coming in a matter of days, so you have to figure we’ll know more very, very soon.
