Texas DC Manny Diaz Withdraws from Florida International Consideration
It was widely reported over the past few days that Texas Longhorns defensive coordinator Manny Diaz was a primary candidate for the head coaching opening at Florida International to replace the recently-fired Mario Cristobal.
Diaz did indeed interview at FIU, but the newest buzz this evening is that he has withdrawn his name for consideration for the position.
According to these reports, Diaz has pulled his name from consideration for the position because he felt the timing wasn’t right for him to return to his hometown of Miami– where his father was once mayor, and he still has close ties. These same reports suggest that Diaz has re-committed to Mack Brown and the Longhorns and will be 100% focused on Texas going forward.
It’s an interesting, if not all that surprising flirtation, by Diaz with a mid-level Division I opening given the struggles of the Texas defense during the 2012 season, and the rumors Diaz could indeed take the fall for an 8-5 finish should Texas struggle in their upcoming Alamo Bowl matchup with the Oregon State Beavers in San Antonio.
We have to assume Diaz and Brown have mended their relationship– at least in the short-term– for the Texas DC to not be interested in the FIU opening and his first crack at a head coaching job.
It’s a positive for Texas fans to hear that Diaz has re-committed to the Longhorns and will definitely extend over to recruiting efforts not only in the short-term but long-term as well, as a new focus is being placed on the 2014 and 2015 classes as the 2012 season wraps up.
Manny Diaz won’t be a coordinator for long– we have to assume — but at least for now it appears his home will remain in Austin.
