All Eyes Are on Bronco Mendenhall at the Poinsettia Bowl

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Is there a better name in all of College Football than Bronco Mendenhall?

Nope…

Not one that is even close…

And the name is not just a marketing stunt either as Mendenhall is the fire and power that has fueled the BYU Cougars for the past 10 seasons.

So if you are one of the folks out there who have not witnessed a Mendenhall coached game, tonight is your nite as the Cougars will face the San Diego State Aztecs in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Now, this game is not going to be a score fest and it might be a little ugly as BYU has the No. 3 ranked defense in all of college football that will face an Aztec team that averaged 35 points and 230 yards rushing a game.

In other words, something will have to give.

Which always makes for some compelling football action…

But as most of the fans and sports writers will talk about Replay Gate and the old Mountain West Conference rivalry and history these two teams have, look beyond that and deeper into the story.

Mendenhall was courted by every single program that had and opening over the past month.

And for good reason…

He has rebuilt a proud program into a viable competitor year in and year out.

Any major BCS School would love to have him and there are some NFL executives roaming around San Diego, California tonight as well.

After all, Mendenhall is the guy who recruited and shaped NFL All-Pro Brian Urlacher into the beast he is today.

And guess who will probably be looking for a head coach in a few weeks…

(whispers… the Chicago Bears)

Plus he is the same guy who has been changing into to jeans and cruising the Southern Pacific Coast on a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle following practice this week.

Telling you…

The name just simply fits…

So with that enjoy the game and be sure to watch with the a critical eye…

Cause a lot of College Athletic Directors and NFL GM’s will be doing the same.
