I love bowl games. I also love marching bands. I’m not ashamed of either of these facts. So, when the matchup for the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl was announced, I was excited. Anytime I can watch 2 potent offenses like Boise State and Washington go at it, I’m on board. And neither the Broncos or Huskies disappointed as it came down to a last minute field goal by Boise State to squeak out a 28-26 win.
This game showcased 2 offenses that can really move the football at times, and for the most part they didn’t disappoint. As a guy who loves lots of points I would have always liked to see a little more scoring, but all in all a very entertaining game. But that’s sort of what college football is all about. You get a couple of teams together that didn’t have BCS aspirations, earned their spots in the bowl and went out and played hard in front of their fans. Again, I love bowl games.
By halftime this game looked like it was going to be a real shootout as they had 35 total points, but both teams came out in the 2nd half with some defense and points became very hard to come by. Speaking of offense, 2 excellent signal callers were on display, Joe Southwick for Boise State and Keith Price for Washington, but even in a loss the day was stolen by Huskie sophomore running back Bishop Sankey. He became the focus of the Washington offense and when you look back at why the Huskies lost, don’t look at Sankey and his 30 carry 279 yards of total offense and 1 touchdown he produced. I can’t wait to go back and watch it again, because if you love to watch a running back work, keep an eye on Sankey.
But in the end it came down to the foot of Boise State kicker Michael Frisini and his ability to knock in an easy 27 yard field goal. In a game that showcased so many plays, it is fitting it came down to a single kick. In a season that has showcased such bad kicking, I was glad to see Frisini was able to finish the game off with his leg.
In the final analysis, I was very impresed with how the University of Washington hung with Boise State. I think most assumed the Broncos would ring the Huskies up, but it ended up being an instant classic. The biggest takeaways I got from this game are first that Boise State is very lucky to still have head coach Chris Petersen and will continue to win, and secondly this Washington team is one on the come up and I look for big things from the 3 headed monster of quarterback Keith Price, running back Sankey and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
