The Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27 is expected to be one of the higher scoring games on the bowl season as Las Vegas has the over/under set at 80 1/2 points.

That over/under may have just gone up as Tevin McDonald, UCLA‘s safety and second-leading tackler, has been suspended due to a violation of team rules.

Head coach Jim Mora wouldn’t comment on why the sophomore safety didn’t take the trip to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl, but multiple reports say that McDonald failed a drug test.

Apparently, McDonald tested positive for marijuana and according to reports, the UCLA team rule is to suspend a player for one game following a third failed test.

This has been a prominent problem in college football this season, and is one that will need to be addressed in the future so that punishments fit the crime and the severity is equal from all teams.

Whether his suspension was drug-related or not, UCLA could be in for some serious trouble as they face a Baylor offense that averages 44.1 points per game, good for fifth in the country. They are also third in the country in pass yards per game as senior quarterback Nick Florence has thrown for 4,121 yards and 31 touchdowns this season.

Without a safety, the senior quarterback’s 343 yard per game average is sure to elevate, and possibly even the 44 point per game average as well.

UCLA has been one of the surprise stories of the 2012 season and this is a tough loss for them, coming at a time when they’re hoping to avoid an overall tough loss to end the season.
