Military Bowl Preview: San Jose State vs. Bowling Green

Kyle Terada-USA Today Sports

Sometimes when it comes to a college football bowl game, it’s a case of less is more. In this year’s Military Bowl between the San Jose State Spartans and the Bowling Green Falcons, what might make this game most entertaining is about the 2 defenses and what they bring to the table. Less yards, less points, but more excitement.

On paper Bowling Green is pretty overmatched, especially comparing offenses to offenses. The Spartans love to fling it down the field and with a quarterback like David Fales to throw it around you expect to see them do the same here. But on the flip side all those passing attempts put Fales in harms way, and with an aggressive defense like Bowling Green runs he could take some serious big hits. But even with that, I expect San Jose State to put up some points but it’s not going to be easy. This Falcons defense is very stingy.

I’d love to tell you that the Bowling Green offense is also proficient like the SJSU offense, but that would be a lie. But along those same lines the SJSU defense, while aggressive isn’t on par with what Bowling Green can do. Yards won’t be easy to come by, but don’t be shocked to see Bowling Green break off a big play or two when the SJSU defense gets amped and guesses wrong.

The x-factor in this whole game is going to be how San Jose reacts to losing their head coach Mike MacIntyre as he’s left to accept the head coaching position at Colorado. I suppose every team handles it differently, but you have to expect SJSU to come out a little flat initially, and if they do Bowling Green could take advantage and get out to an early lead. But if it’s the opposite and they come out fired up to play for school pride they might get the jump on the Falcons.

My prediction-It’s strength against strength and weakness against weakness for these two teams. I don’t expect a high-scoring game, but it’s going to be the team that makes the big plays, whether it’s offense, defense, or special teams that will make the difference. Bowling Green’s defense has been so impressive this year that I think between the hot streak they’ve been on, and SJSU losing their coach will mean Bowling Green can slow down the Spartan defense just enough to pull off the upset in a close battle.
