Defensive Struggle Coming In Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The final game of the December 29 college football bowl game slate features a matchup of teams that barely finished .500 or just above. The Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe has the 7-5 TCU Horned Frogs facing the 6-6 Michigan State Spartans at 10:15 p.m. Eastern Time. This is a game where defense is going to rein supreme.

These two teams don’t give up many points as both were tops in their conference for defense. If one team gets to 20 points, I will be very surprised. Michigan State has to depend on their running game to be successful but faces a very tough defense in TCU. TCU is best when they pass the ball deep down the field with a 6-0 record when the Horned Frogs average more than eight yards per pass. If Michigan State can avoid the deep ball, the Spartans can stay in this game longer.

As I mentioned before, this is a game where the defenses will be the keys to the game. I don’t see either team scoring much on what should be a perfect night for football. I’ll go with TCU 16-10 to finish the season with an 8-5 record. This has just not been a great time for Sparty in East Lansing and this bowl game will prove that point exactly. TCU played well in their first year in the Big 12 Conference and will show why they can compete with the big schools in this contest. TCU is very talented and could be in more higher-ranked bowl games again very soon.
