Virgina Tech Hokies Survive the Russell Athletic Bowl, ACC Gets a Win

Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports

They say a win is a win right?

That is about all the ACC Football powers that be can said about the Virginia Tech Hokies come-from-behind, overtime 13-10 win against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

Yes, the win was a must for the Atlantic Coast Conference but goodness gracious…

“Not everything in life is real smooth,” Hokies head coach Frank Beamer said. “These players worked hard and how they reacted to adversity and to disappointment and when all of them wanted to do better – they kept together.”

And nothing about this game was smooth…

There were times, like from the start of the game until the end, that it seemed liked neither team wanted to win this game.

For example… both teams finished with an identical 196 yards of total offense…

Yes…

Total Offense.

Rutgers pounded out 62 yards rushing and a 129 yards passing to Virgina Tech’s three yards rushing (yep… three…) and 193 yards passing.

The rain didn’t help, but these two teams might have set the game of football back 45 years with their performance tonight.

Even the Russell Athletic Bowl Twitter Handle was blown away by the event and the outcome…

And we made it was right…

You could literally feel Hokie Nation and ACC Commissioner John Swofford exhale.

“That’s just the way the game panned out,” Russell Athletic Bowl MVP and Hokie CB Antone Exum said. “We never lose hope with the guys on the other side of the ball. Our job, honestly, is just to go out there and get as many three-and-outs as possible and give the most opportunities as we can to put points on the board. We did a good job of that tonight.”

The win gets the the ACC to 1-1 in the 2012 Bowl Season.

Worst case, the conference can say they won a game!
