College football used to be about tradition. You would watch the big bowl games with your family, on the same day, the same time, each year. No longer is that the case and we’ve got to change that. Not just for next year but to save the sport as a whole.
As many of you know, I’d like to kill the bowl season completely. It is just a bunch of exhibition games that mean nothing in the overall sense of things. However, I’m a realist and I get that even with a playoff, the bowls are here to stay. They make too much money and give fans a good excuse to go on vacation to different cities. Perhaps if people stopped watching, something would change but that isn’t going to happened.
What I’d like to see is one bowl game per night for 2 weeks leading up to the BCS bowls. Too many days now are filled with awful matchups featuring teams from the MAC and Sun Belt conferences. These squads could barely win a game in the major conferences so why should they have the right to play in the “postseason”?
Give us Top 25 matchups almost exclusively. I understand you’d have to dip into the next tier of teams to fill the amount of bowls I’m asking for but at least make the matchups as juicy as can be. The bowl season is basically like the WWE as it is. It is made of set matchups purely for the bottom line. Mostly likely those top 25 teams would fit that billing.
One of the few bowl games I actually was excited for is the Alamo Bowl and now I’m looking forward to the Chick-fil-A bowl. Why? Top 25 teams are paired up in what should be a matchup that “means something” and gives us a measuring stick heading into next year.
