20 College Football Records Likely to Fall in 2013
The 2012 college football season was one of the most enjoyable we've experienced as fans and writers who follow the game closely. Several records were set during the 2012 season, and some of the game's best individual talents put up performances that have them in the right place to break individual records during the 2013. A few of these records are basically foregone conclusions to be broken, while others will require all-time great season-long performances which are unprecedented.
The 20 college football records likely to fall in 2013 aren't just individual or performance-based, they are also based on things like attendance, the business side of football, and the Heisman Trophy. College football as a whole could set new standards in 2013 which we could have never previously imagined as the BCS era draws to a close and we enter the brave new world of a playoff system beginning with the 2014-2015 season.
There are a few names, however, which come up time and again. These are guys which some of us are familiar with, but others, especially a certain Sun Belt QB, that may be under the radar, but have the ability to re-shape the record books in their conferences before everything is said and done in 2013.

College Football Attendance Record Could be Shattered
Nearly 50 million college football fans attended games across the country in 2012-- an exact number of 49,699,419. The game's as popular as it's ever been and there's little doubt this record will be shattered yet again in 2013.
Aaron Murray Could Break Career SEC Passing Yardage Record
Currently 5th among SEC quarterbacks since 2000 at 10,091 yards of total passing, Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray needs only 1,463 yards to pass David Greene-- a fellow Georgia QB-- as the all-time leader. Murray will pass Eli Manning into 4th place of SEC quarterbacks since 2000 in the first game of the 2013 season and should be gunning for the record by about halfway into 2013.
Marqise Lee Could Break Career Pac-12 Receiving Yardage Record
While it may be difficult with a young quarterback like the unproven Max Wittek, USC Trojans stud senior receiver Marqise Lee would need only 1,076 yards to break Derek Hagan’s all-time PAC-12 career receiving yardage record during 2013. I consider this one a done deal.
Tajh Boyd Could Break ACC Career Passing Touchdowns Record
Clemson Tigers star QB Tajh Boyd needs only 23 touchdown passes to break Phillip Rivers’ existing record of 95 career touchdowns. This should be easily reachable in 12 games for the early 2013 Heisman Trophy candidate, especially with Sammy Watkins’ return.

Only Ohio State quarterback legend Archie Manning has won two Heisman Trophies in consecutive years in 1974 and 1975. With a performance that mirrors his in 2012, Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johhny Manziel could repeat this remarkable feat.
Kolton Browning Could Break Sun Belt Career Total Yardage Record
Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Kolton Browning would need 3,109 yards of total offense to break Arkansas State QB Ryan Aplin’s record, which may be more of a stretch than Troy QB Corey Robinson is looking at, but given his explosive 2012, the record could be well within reach.
Teddy Bridgewater Could Break BJ Symons’ All-Time Single Season Passing Record
If there’s any quarterback in college football that could approach former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback B.J. Symons, who holds the all-time single season passing record with 5,336 yards, it’s Louisville junior Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater broke the 400-yard mark twice this season, and, if he could do this with consistency next season, Symons’ record could be in danger.
Michigan Could Bypass Texas As College Football’s Most Valuable Program
The Texas Longhorns football program is worth $761.7 million dollars as of this year’s Forbes rankings, while the Michigan Wolverines are a close second at $731.9 million. With the Longhorns’ struggles and the re-emergence of the Wolverines into a national power, 2013 could be the season when the Wolverines jump the Longhorns in terms of overall revenue, and become college football’s most valuable program.
Corey Robinson Could Break Sun Belt Career Passing Yardage Record
Troy Trojans senior quarterback Corey Robinson needs only 495 yards passing to break Ryan Aplin’s career Sun Belt passing yardage record during his senior season in 2013. Get used to seeing his name.
Ka’Deem Carey Could Break Barry Sanders’ All Time Single Season Rushing Record
If there’s any running back in college football that could approach Oklahoma State Cowboys legend Barry Sanders who ran for 2,628 yards in 1988, it’s Arizona Wildcats sophomore Ka’Deem Carey. Carey’s 1,982 yards in 2012 is the 24th best single season performance in college football history, and he’s just getting started.
Jadeveon Clowney Could Become the First Defensive Player to Win the Heisman Since 1997
It’s been since 1997 that a defensive player won the Heisman Trophy when Charles Woodson took home the college game’s biggest honor, but South Carolina Gamecocks DE Jadeveon Clowney could change that in 2013. He’ll need to put up some unprecedented numbers to be in the mix, but, if anyone can do so, it’s Clowney.
Eric Thomas Could Break Sun Belt Career Receiving Touchdowns Record
Troy Trojans senior wide receiver Eric Thomas would need only eight receiving touchdowns in 2013, to break T.Y. Hilton’s career touchdown receiving record of 24. Eight touchdown catches by Thomas from Corey Robinson, as previously mentioned, would give Thomas 25 for his career.
Aaron Murray Could Also Break SEC Career Total Offense Record
Murray needs only 1,939 yards of total offense to break Tim Tebow’s all-time SEC total offense record. He should pass former Kentucky Wildcats QB Jared Lorenzen into fourth place in the rankings in Georgia’s 2013 opener.
Nick Harwell Could Break MAC Career Receiving Yardage Record
Miami (OH) wideout Nick Harwell needs on 1,022 yards receiving in 2013 to become the all-time leader in receiving yardage in MAC history. Harwell posted 1,425 yards receiving as a sophomore, but slumped some as a junior, but this is definitely within his reach.
Deone Bucannon Could Break PAC-12 Career Solo Tackles Record
Washington State DB Deone Bucannon needs only 52 solo tackles in his senior season to break Mason Foster’s record of 243 and become the all-time career leader in solo tackles in PAC-12 history. Bucannon’s tendency to be wild and out-of-control could stand in his way, but if he puts it all together, Mason’s record is in jeopardy.
Corey Robinson Could Also Break Sun Belt Career Passing Touchdowns Record
Corey Robinson could also break the Sun Belt career passing touchdowns record held by Florida Atlantic signal caller Rusty Smith by throwing 16 passing touchdowns in 2013. What’s interesting about this chase is that Louisiana-Monroe senior quarterback Kolton Browning also has a shot at Smith’s record, and could break it by throwing 17 touchdowns. This should be an interesting storyline in the Sun Belt all season long.
Marqise Lee Could Break Trevor Insley’s All Time Single Season Receiving Record
If there’s any wide receiver in college football that could approach former Nevada Wolfpack wideout Trevor Insley’s record or 2,060 yards receiving in a single season (1999), it’s USC star Marqise Lee. Lee’s 1,721 yards in 2012 shows he has what it takes, and with the maturity of Trojans QB Max Wittek and some big early-season performances, he could get there.
BCS National Championship Game Could Be the Most Watched Ever
The BCS National Championship game to be played on January 6, 2014, regardless of matchup, could be the most watched college football game in history. Given the game is the last BCS National Championship game prior to the beginning of the college football playoff system with the 2014-2015 season, the novelty factor of the BCS’ swan song should be massive-- leading to massive ratings.
Corey Robinson Could Also Break Sun Belt Career Total Yardage Record
In his quest to completely re-write the Sun Belt record books, Troy QB Corey Robinson would need only 2,476 yards of total offense in 2013 to break Arkansas State QB Ryan Aplin’s record of 12,509 yards.
Eric Kendricks Could Break Lawrence Flugence’s All Time Single Season Tackles Record
If there’s any defensive player in college football that could approach Texas Tech Red Raiders LB Lawrence Flugence’s record of 193 tackles in a season, it’s UCLA sophomore LB Eric Kendricks. Kendricks tallied 151 tackles this season (95 of which were solo) and has the type of instinct and ability that could help him make a run at this unbelievable record.
