5 Reasons Why Alabama Crimson Tide Won't Win Third Straight BCS National Championship in 2013

The Alabama Crimson Tide just won their second national championship in as many years. Throw in the national championship from 2009 and Alabama owns three of the last four BCS national championships.

There’s no doubt the Crimson Tide is one of the strongest football programs in the country, capable of winning a championship nearly every season. With the 2012 pummeling of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the championship, many folks are debating the possibilities of the Crimson Tide winning three straight national championships.

This has not happened in college football in a very, very long time, and has only happened one time in the history of college football.

So the “Gods of college football” are looking to win three straight championships and since they are the Alabama Crimson Tide led by the mighty Nick Saban we should just go ahead and give them the third championship now because no one could possibly touch them, right?

In the words of Lee Corso, not so fast my friend. Alabama is not unbeatable. In fact, the Crimson Tide finished the regular season at 12-1 this season. I will reiterate that what Alabama has done in the last few seasons is remarkable, and I understand the quality of competition in the SEC, but to assume the team can’t be beaten is simply foolish. Even in past seasons it had to win a championship with a “one” in the loss column. The fact that the team has lost in seasons past gives me plenty of reason to believe it will not win another championship in 2013.

With that being said, as good as Alabama has been in years past, there is simply too much against it to win its third straight national championship in 2013. Alabama’s mighty reign over college football will come to an end in 2013.

Here are five reasons why.

Too Many Players are Leaving

Alabama is losing a ridiculous number of players to the NFL draft. Cornerback Dee Milliner, running back Eddie Lacy, offensive tackle D. J. Fluker, offensive lineman Barrett Jones, offensive guard Chance Warmack, nose tackle Jesse Williams, safety Robert Lester and linebacker Nico Johnson among others.

Level of Competition in the SEC

The SEC is already the strongest conference college football has to offer, but it’s about to get even better. According to Rivals, five of the top ten recruiting classes belong to SEC schools. The Florida Gators own the number one spot. Alabama is close behind at number three, but still is not receiving the recruiting class it is used to, only grabbing two five-star commits.

The Texas A&M Aggies are not getting any weaker either. Alabama already lost to them this year, and the Aggies own the number eight recruiting class and have a lot of returning players.

The LSU Tigers are another team that has given Alabama some trouble. They too, are in the top ten with the number six recruiting class.

It's Simply Not Likely

Winning three championships in a row is just not likely. The last and only team to do so was the Minnesota Gophers way back in 1936. The Gophers won the 1934, 1935 and 1936 championships.

The odds are not in Alabama’s favor.

Alabama Can Be Beaten

Alabama has been vulnerable in the past. In 2011, Alabama needed two attempts to get past the LSU Tigers and even then only won by three points. In 2012, Alabama lost to Texas A&M and nearly lost to LSU and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Alabama is not invincible.

Overconfidence

Along with back to back championships comes an overconfidence that can get one into trouble. Overconfidence can cause a lot of trouble for a team that’s used to winning.
