Manti Te’o’s Girlfriend Didn’t Exist
Today it was written on Deadspin that the girlfriend of Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Manti Te’o didn’t exist at all. It was a well documented story that within a six hour period that his grandmother and now apparent girlfriend passed away. I really think and want to believe that Te’o was a victim a horrible person, more so than him just creating it in his mind.
Te’o released a statement earlier this afternoon and part of it he said the following: “This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.”
As for a prospect standpoint, I don’t think it hurts his stock as of now, however teams are going to prod him with deeply personal questions, and they might cross a few lines to see how he reacts to criticism to show his character. If he comes out positively it might in fact boost his stock that’s already high. If I were him, I’d focus on the workouts that are physical, and on the side maybe talk to a professional or two to get his head screwed back on straight so is on the proper road to personal clarity. This story just shows how seemingly cruel some people can be to one another. Despite not a Fighting Irish fan, I do respect the man Te’o is and can only hope that he can become a complete person on the football field and in his private life.
