Plenty More Information Will Come About Regarding the Manti Te'o Hoax

What in the holy hell is going on with this Manti Te’o story? For those of you that don’t know, the high level overview is that Lennay Kekua, the supposed girlfriend of Te’o, who reportedly passed away from leukemia in September, never actually existed. To add to the story, reports are that Te’o was aware of this and helped to perpetuate the hoax.

At the same time, Notre Dame has issued a statement that Te’o and his family came to them months ago, informing them of the situation and that he was the victim of a hoax. According to that statement, authorities are still investigating the situation.

There does seem to be a preponderance of evidence that Kekua was not actually a real person. The question left in my mind is whether or not Te’o was aware of this. Was he a part of the scheme, hoping to use it for publicity? If so, was he stupid enough to think that nobody would figure it out? Or, was Te’o simply the victim of a horrible prank that may have been perpetrated by someone he considered to be a close friend.

Personally, I am holding off judgment due to the simple fact that there is going to be an overabundance of evidence that will be coming out in the coming hours and days. This is certainly not a story that is going to fall by the wayside anytime soon.

Regardless of the level of involvement Te’o had in this situation, the whole thing is mind-blowingly depraved. However, if he was involved, the level of depravity is certainly ratcheted up a few notches.

What do you think? Was Te’o the victim of a horrible prank or was he in on it from the beginning?
