The Arizona State Sun Devils did well in 2012 under first-year starting quarterback Taylor Kelly and have been preparing to build off a strong finish to last season heading into 2013, but that could all change. Texas A&M quarterback Jameill Showers is transferring following Johnny Manziel‘s Heisman Trophy campaign and Arizona State is one of four schools he’s considering. If he agrees to play for the Sun Devils, Showers could create a quarterback controversy in Tempe that could change everything for Arizona State going forward.

There’s not a lot off which to base opinions on Showers as was a backup for both seasons in College Station behind Ryan Tannehill and Manziel. He played mop-up duty for the Aggies in seven different games in 2012, compiling 319 total passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception while recording a 132.7 passer rating. Of course, those numbers all came late in blowout wins, so you really can’t base his talent level off that.

Kelly, however, was pretty solid in his sophomore season, stepping in for Brock Osweiler, who’s now Peyton Manning‘s apprentice with the Denver Broncos. Kelly threw for just over 3,000 yards, 29 touchdowns and only nine interceptions, which makes expectations for his 2013 campaign extremely high, granted he’s still the starter.

Again, Showers is still considering his transfer options, so he may not even pick Arizona State and then the Sun Devils can go on as planned. The competition would definitely be good for Kelly, but he’s definitely hoping Showers decides to stay close to home by choosing Baylor or Texas Tech, two of his other three options (California is the other).
