Drake Martinez has been looking for the right college for him to play football, and for a while, some people doubted that he would follow his brother’s footsteps. Taylor Martinez, Nebraska‘s record-holding quarterback, must have done his best efforts to get his brother to Lincoln.

The younger Martinez is a three-star athlete, according to Rivals.com, and committed to the Cornhuskers as a safety.

Much to the dismay of his family, Martinez was down to two final college choices– Michigan State and Nebraska. The commitment to the Spartans would be their 18th, but he made Nebraska’s list of commitments as the No. 23 commitment.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound athlete has been recruited heavily by the Huskers and committed verbally to the school on Wednesday. He has 1,600 yards rushing in his senior season to go along with 34 total touchdowns, making him a sleeper as a three-star.

Many say he is one of the most versatile recruits in the 2013 class. His versatility was evident during the season as he played both offense and defense for his high school in Laguna Beach, Calif., as he also recorded six interceptions. His 4.4 speed makes him one of the fastest safeties in the class as well and defense appears to be his specialty as he committed as a safety.

This is a big loss for the Spartans as they were hoping to steal one away from the Cornhuskers, but Martinez’s family ties were way too strong and he made Nebraska a happy program.

He will likely redshirt his freshman season, but will be a solid defensive player for years to come.
