No. 1 Recruit Robert Nkemdiche Visitng LSU Friday
The final days before national signing day on Feb. 6 are sure to include a few surprises and curveballs between today and Wednesday, and one of those surprises came from the nation’s top player, Robert Nkemdiche (Loganville, Ga., Grayson) when he sent out this tweet:
It was reported earlier this week that the 6-5 278-pound defensive end was going to cancel a weekend visit to LSU after visiting Ole Miss last weekend, but this time of year it’s hard to believe anything until the player signs his name on the dotted line.
Ole Miss has been rumored to be the favorite for Nkemdiche ever since he decommitted from Clemson last fall and with his older brother Denzel leading the team in tackles last season, the opportunity to play with his brother appeared to have won over Robert and the Nkemdiche family.
The visit to LSU could be a sign that Nkemdiche wanted to pursue all of his options and his parents were pressuring him to commit to Ole Miss. Heading to LSU may be an opportunity to fortify his decision that Ole Miss is indeed that place where he needs to be the next three-four years, and doesn’t necessarily indicate any wavering in his decision.
If I was in Nkemdiche’s position I would take all the visits that were allowed and soak up the experience, because you can only be the No. 1 ranked recruit in the nation once in your life. After he announces his decision to the world on Wednesday, all the glitz and glamour that accompany these visits become a memory, so why not make as many as you can, when you can.
From the LSU perspective, getting Nkemdiche on campus is a minor victory and Les Miles and his staff can give him their best sales pitch with days before national signing day. Perhaps Nkemdiche is blown away by the visit and has those memories lingering in his head as he prepares to announce his decision at 7:30 am on Wednesday, and shocks the world by donning a purple and gold Tigers hat.
That certainly would send shock waves through the Ole Miss community, but I think it’s a long shot scenario and I still expect Nkemdiche to be with Hugh Freeze in Oxford next season.
