According to several reports, the Texas Longhorns have earned a switched commitment from Amarillo Palo Duro standout and combo three-star athlete Montrel Meander.

Originally a Washington State Cougars commit, Meander has reportedly switched his commitment to the Longhorns according to a well-known Texas source noted below:

Meander was part of a group of several 2013 recruits who were in Austin over the weekend on official visits including former Oregon Ducks commit Dontre Wilson (who now is evidently leaning towards the Ohio State Buckeyes) and five-star defensive end Frank Herron (who re-confirmed his commitment to the LSU Tigers today).

Meander will give Mack Brown an interesting set of skills to work with. At 6’3″, 180 he played both in the secondary and as a wide receiver at Palo Duro and could reasonably make the transition to either with the Longhorns.

As a wideout in 2012, Meander caught 24 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns, also tallying 109 tackles and an interception at defensive back. Known for his rangy athleticism, Meander in time could be a nice fit either in the Longhorns secondary or at wide receiver where productive depth is desperately needed for Major Applewhite’s offensive unit.

Meander is the second Palo Duro athlete to play a major sport at Texas in recent years, the most recent being basketball player Justin Mason who was a mainstay in the Longhorns backcourt for four seasons between 2006-2010. Palo Duro also produced Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman and former Missouri Tigers standout Evander “Ziggy”Hood who tallied 42 total tackles and three sacks for Mike Tomlin this fall.

Meander’s switch is welcome news for Mack Brown and his staff who have had a rough go recruiting wise in 2012 with decommitments from several big names including A’Shawn Robinson and Ricky Seals-Jones.

It’ll be interesting leading into Wednesday’s National Signing Day to see if any others on the fence follow Meander’s lead and decide to don the Burnt Orange.
