National Signing Day 2013: Does Ole Miss Have Enough to Sway Robert Nkemdiche?

The biggest story as National Signing Day 2013 approaches is the announcement of top recruit Robert Nkemdiche, defensive end from Loganville, GA. Throughout most of the recruiting process, Nkemdiche had Ole Miss as his top choice, but visits to powerhouse SEC foes Florida and LSU have seemingly throw a kink in Ole Miss’ courting of the best player in the class.

Nkemdiche has family ties with the Rebels—his brother Denzel currently plays for the university—but he has to decide whether or not he wants to play with his brother and be a big fish in a small pond, or be a rather large fish in a national championship pond.

Ole Miss is doing incredibly well for themselves on the recruiting trail this year, so that has to help their chances of landing the No. 1 guy. It’s not like they haven’t had premier talent in the past, so Nkemdiche would still have a shot to take his talents to the NFL level by playing with the Rebels. Two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning went there, and more recently top picks Patrick Willis and Michael Oher among others. The Rebels already landed the top wide receiver in this year’s class in Laquon Treadwell, and recently got a commitment from Elijah Daniel, the 4th best defensive end in the country.

Daniel and Nkemdiche would make a formidable duo on the ends of that defensive line, but LSU came calling and Nkemdiche seemed to thoroughly enjoy his most recent visit. If chasing a national championship in college is part of his decision, he’ll likely go with Florida or LSU. If playing at the NFL is the ultimate goal, he cannot go wrong with any of the three.
