With only seven weeks left until spring practice beings at the Auburn Athletics Complex, true Auburn Tiger fans are already looking forward to catching their first glimpses of Montravius Adams wearing blue and orange.
Adams, a star defensive lineman from Vienna, GA is a major addition for Coach Gus Malzahn. When asked about how it felt to ink the 6-3, 281 pound tackle Malzahn said, “It was a great feeling when he put on that Auburn hat. It was a special feeling… Everyone in the country was wanting him. He got back to Auburn, because he loved Auburn before, but he developed a relationship with the new staff,” according to Auburn’s official team site.
The staff Malzahn is referring to is Coach Rodney Garner. A former Auburn player himself, Garner was an all-SEC player in 1988 and most recently held the position of assistant head coach for the Georgia Bulldogs.
I think because Garner just came from Georgia, which was one of Adams other top schools, and also being an Auburn alumni gave him a unique perspective to give when recruiting Adams. Of course, I don’t know exactly what he said to convince Adams to sign with Auburn, but I’d imagine he told the star about his own life changing experiences with the Tigers, like meeting his future wife there and coming back to coach.
Adams is strong, fast and will cause havoc in the middle this season. SEC offensive coaches will definitely have their hands full when planning a strategy to slow this kid down. He’s big enough to influence the run game and clog things up on the line; however, he’s also quick enough to get to the flats on a screen play.
If Adams hits the weights this summer and improves his already stellar conditioning, Tiger fans should have a lot to cheer about this season. Auburn’s first game is Aug. 3 at home against the Washington State Cougars.
