Georgia Bulldogs Will Be One of the Deepest Teams in SEC Football in 2013

Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports

A lot has been said around the world of the Georgia Bulldogs and their football program over the past week. Some good and mostly bad as fans for some reason feel the nervous terror of coming up short again in 2013.

So if you are one of the true fans who have been biting your fingernails off the past few days, let’s just say it is going to be OK. Take a huge, big, deep breath, order up some chicken fingers from Gutherie’s and think about the positives.

So what if Georgia is going to have the toughest schedule in the nation in 2013. That’s only on paper. Rise above the doubt and embrace the fact you have a hungry and loaded roster that win or lose you should be proud of cheering for on Saturdays.

And unlike in years past the loss of a Jarvis Jones will not be as devastating as it might seem…

Why…

Because Mark Richt and his Bulldog staff have figured out the key to the Alabama Crimson Tide and some other SEC programs. It’s a pretty simple formula actually to be honest. And it all starts and ends with a little thing called the Red Shirt.

And it ain’t just any Red Shirt fans. It’s the ability to place a Five Star or Four Star talent on the field every day battling and most of the time beating a starter only to patiently hold them back. The 2012 Bulldog team had very little room for young talent to make an impact. So Richt chose to Red Shirt 19 freshmen and 17 sophomores in order to give them a greater chance to make an impact at just the right time for the team as a whole.

If you think this is a luxury every other team in the country has, you are sorely mistaken. Now every team has this type of system implemented, but they only are Red Shirting around 10 to 15 players total. Georgia just Red Shirted an entire team last season.

And as Todd Grantham begins to roll out his 3-4 Defense in 2013, he will have a group of experienced guys led by the likes of Mike Thornton. Thornton is a Red Shirt Sophomore Nose Guard who is 6-1, 302 pounds. A hog you need to anchor the middle of that 3-4 who will be ready to wreak havoc come opening day in against the Clemson Tigers.

And that is just one of many…

So don’t fret Georgia fans. You will have a lot of guys to love in 2013. And the good or the bad will be a heck of a lot more fun if you sit back and support these young kids and enjoy the ride.
