North Carolina an Old Breath of Fresh Air for Vic Koenning

A big emphasis for the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2013 will be on the defensive side of the ball.

Pretty much everyone knows Carolina will be able to outscore just about everyone in conference, except for maybe the Clemson Tigers. But what can’t happen in 2013 is another game like what happened at home in 2012 against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Even that near-debacle against a linebacker playing quarterback for the Maryland Terrapins can never, ever happen again…

So to help bolster the efforts of Defensive Coordinator Dan Disch, head coach Larry Fedora brought in Vic Koenning as the associate head coach for defense and inside linebackers coach. Koenning was the defensive coordinator for the Illinois Fighting Ilini for the past four seasons, and turned down an extension offer to come to Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

A big reason why Koenning left Illinois, besides the pathetic talent, had a lot to do with the success he had in ACC Football with the Tigers. At Clemson, Koenning had one of the best defenses in the nation.

Another reason why Koenning decided to head to Carolina is the following:

Jabari Price,Senior Cornerback; Tim Scott, Junior Cornerback; Kareem Martin, Senior Defensive End; Tommy Heffernan, Senior Linebacker…

You get the idea. Add freshmen Greg Webb, Dajaun Drennon, and Desmond Lawrence, and there is a lot of upside in the Tar Heel defense.

So watch what Koenning is able to do. You know he will teach these group of talented players to be aggressive and keep the pressure on the opposing offense. Cause you know Carolina will be able to outscore anyone.
