Was Matthew Thomas Forced To Pick Florida State?
Despite all of the coaching changes at Florida State University this winter, National Signing Day last Wednesday was certainly one to be proud of for the Noles. Probably their most prized signee, 5-star linebacker, Matthew Thomas, shocked a good portion of the nation when he announced his decision to attend the Tallahassee, Florida university. While this move was seen as a major coupe for the Seminoles, we learned today that this move almost didn’t happen.
After he spoke with Josh Newberg of 247Sports, we learned that the decision to attend FSU was not necessarily decided upon by Thomas, but rather his mom. Matthew was apparently all set to join Lane Kiffin and the USC Trojans out in Los Angeles. Thomas admitted that he made his final decision after his mother would not sign his National Letter of Intent to go to USC. Yet another saga in the yearly drama that is parents becoming involved in the recruiting process.
While this is not as outrageous as the Alex Collins story from last week, it can still hold some weight in how Thomas’ Florida State career pans out. He himself said that the way this all unfolded will in no way affect his commitment to the Noles on the field, but still, how are we to know that? It can be easy for a young man to say the right thing in front of a camera or microphone, but be completely feeling another emotion on the inside.
Time will tell how Matthew Thomas really feels about his time at Florida State. If this was a decision that was made completely against his will, I’m sure that it will somehow become clearly evident. On the flip side, he may get to Tallahassee and decide that maybe mama was right, and this is the place he needed to be all along. Florida State landed a 5-star player on the field last Wednesday, but did they land someone that has a 5-star commitment to them?
