College football is filled with great teams, who’ve had great coaches and produced hall of fame players we all can remember. The amazing passion that fans and alumni have for their schools is cult-like and some might even say religious. Two schools with the largest and most dedicated congregations are the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Well, unbeknownst to me, my new marketing teacher is a die-hard Ohio State fan and unfortunately I think I really pissed him off in our first class. It all started like any other class with first day introductions, but when it was my turn things got heated. I told him my hobby was writing about SEC football and the poop hit the fan.
It all started when I stated that Alabama has the best chance to win the BCS title again in 2013 because of their strong recruiting and cast of returning star players. With rage in his eyes his looked at me and said “Who was the only team undefeated last season, huh, Who?”
Now of course any college football fan worth their own mustard knows that Ohio State, which was banned from post-season play, was the only team with a perfect 12-0 record last season. And hypothetically could have won at least one more game because of the mediocrity of talent in the Big Ten conference last season.
Alabama on the other hand had one loss against the Texas A&M Aggies and the spectacular Johnny Manziel; a player who made history by winning the Heisman trophy with his natural football prowess and became a celebrity in the process. I mean Alabama was good but some players like Manziel are just unstoppable.
Needless to say by now my professor is fuming and the nonchalant smirk on my face isn’t helping. Especially when I mentioned that the Buckeyes experienced their stellar success under former Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer, an SEC turned Big Ten convert.
Honestly I should have shut my mouth and let him finish the introductions, but that’s just not my style. I think Ohio State and Alabama are arguably the best teams from last season but for very different reasons. I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually do meet in the BCS title game and what a game it would be.
Stay tuned because if I fail this semester you’ll already know why.
