Top 10 Birthday Gifts from College Football

open
Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

So today is a milestone for this sports nut as the calendar somehow, someway has turned the page for the 480th time...

That’s right folks, today is this guys 40th birthday...

To be honest, there was that time in 1994 and 1997 where it was touch and go whether or not the circumstances of life and the amount of good times would have other plans. That morning when my liver was staring at me in the bed as I awoke repeating, “No Mas... No Mas,” was a wicked one.

But thanks to the grace of God, an awesome wife, a perfect daughter, a great family, amazing friends and the ability to laugh at my mistakes daily, I somehow made it.

So with this big day upon us all, I got to thinking about some things I would really love to have from sports or life. There is no doubt that the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons or the Atlanta Hawks winning a Championship would be near the top of the list. You could also add a private jam session with Coldplay or Phillip Phillips or The Gourds, winning just enough of the lottery to pay off all debt, college for my daughter and enough to adopt about 10 more kids along with maybe a four-door Jeep Wrangler. Oh and season tickets behind the bench for every home and away North Carolina Basketball game...

Not to be too greedy...

(smiles)

And as the wheels kept turning on dreaming the big dreams, it got me thinking specifically what are 10 things I would love to receive as gifts from College Football in honor of my 40th Birthday?

Lord knows there are a million things that would be amazing presents for us all as fans. Just imagine how cool it would be if the NCAA would grant us all one wish to make the game better or something better for the players on our special day. That would be beyond epic.

So since it is dream time, join me in celebrating the Top 10 Birthday Gifts from College Football...

And on a side note, feel free to check off any of these and send them as soon as you can...

I will be expecting your gracious gift as I pay my silly Birthday Car Tag Tax here in the great state of Georgia...

No. 10 - James Delany's Resignation

10
Reid Compton-USA Today Sports

Everyone knows Big 10 Commissioner James Delany is the devil...

How can anyone trust a man who sometimes goes by Jim and at other times by James depending on his mood and whether or not he was trying to destroy another BCS Conference because his precious Big 10 can’t match up without cheating.

The game of College Football would be so much safer if Delany was retired next to Jerry Sandusky and all else that is old and evil in the game.

No better gift on the face of the earth than to see him anywhere else besides in a position of power...

No. 9 - Miami Hurricanes to Find "The U" Swagger Again

9
Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Despite wanting desperately for the game of College Football to embrace today’s technology without losing its history and tradition, there are some things from the olden day of the 1980s and 1990s that just need to happen.

And atop that list is for somehow, someway the Miami Hurricanes to return to the glory days of The U.

Whether you hated them or not, you have to it admit it was pretty awesome to have the buzz that was the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and their run to the BCS Title Game in 2012.

And that is the same type of buzz that could return on an even greater level if Miami can find its good ole bad-boy, winning ways.

Al Golden has the ability to lead the team back to that level and it would be awesome to see some of The U swagger return in 2013.

No. 8 - Lee Corso's Blessing as His Replacement

8
Phil Sears-USA TODAY Sports

Be honest folks, the only time you really tune into ESPN College GameDay is about five minutes before Lee Corso gets ready to make his call of the week.

It is the greatest crazy moment that perfectly signals the madness that is the next 12 Hours of College Football Saturday.

No one will ever be able to replace Corso...

It is simply impossible...

But I know that I could bring my own special level of crazy to this role. With my incoherent rants, jacked up sense of humor and my southern drawl, I can take this moment and honor Corso like no one else.

I’m ready and willing to start today in order to prep for August...

No. 7 - Make the Kicking Game More Interesting

7
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Much like the art of the Free Throw in College Basketball, the Kicking Game has gone south over the past 10 years...

An extra point is no longer a given anymore which raises the simple question of what in the heck has happened? Isn’t soccer at an all time high as a youth sport? The only team that is suppose to have kicker issues is the Florida State Seminoles? Every other team in the game is suppose to get it and be successful at it on all levels!

So with this aspect at an all time low, it’s time to up the ante and the pressure...

Let’s add points to longer Field Goals to start. Any FG from 0-25 yards is still worth three points. Any FG from 26-50 yards is worth four-points. Any FG over 50 yards is five points but you lose one point if you miss it!

Brilliant!!!

Right???

And on top of all of this move the kickoff back and let players make plays in the return game again. Heck, give a point back to the team who’s kicker makes the tackle on a kickoff...

Just do something to make it consistent and entertaining once again...

No. 6 - High Def Cheerleader Cam

6
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Memo to all of the NCAA...

Technology is here and it will forever be changing the game...

And it’s high time College Football gives all of us who watch the games on our 80 inch 1080p High Def TVs something new to knock our pants off. Yes, we may have the first down markers and all the other fun graphics. But there are some important things missing.

First and foremost, is it too much to ask to have a picture in picture of the cheerleaders constantly on the screen at all times. This will give you more of a live game experience; not to mention a lot of other perks. Wouldn’t you love to get that camera assignment for the game...

In addition, it time for the game to embrace all areas of technology. Why the heck is there not a camera directly on the goal line when those plays are under review. In fact, why can’t a sensor be placed in the ball and under the goal line or in the pylons. As soon as the ball breaks the plane, the sensor triggers a red light in the end zone or in the pylons.

For the record, the same needs to be done with baseball. Sensors in the chest of the uniform and in the knees. We have the technology to put these sensors in fiber form and stitched directly into the uniform. Also have the sensors on the black of home plate and in the baseballs. Makes the strike zone uniform for all players based on the rules.

But in the meantime, as you let this process mentally, just get this cheerleader cam up and running for August...

I mean, have you watched Women’s Beach Volleyball in High Def lately...

You’re welcome...

No. 5 - Success for Larry Fedora with the North Carolina Tar Heels

5
Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

I am very unbiased in my analysis of all sports and I do not let my personal love take hold in any of my official statements...

But with that being said, I am a graduate of Mercer University with a Masters from the University of Arkansas and an unhealthy passion for my North Carolina Tar Heels.

It’s my birthday, so let me have my moment...

The day Mack Brown left for the Texas Longhorns was a sad, sad day. A day I personally thought UNC would never recover from.

The day Carolina hired Butch Davis I told everyone the Heels would be on probation within five years...

I know my sports, I know my football and I love my Tar Heels...

So that is why I cannot be more excited about the potential for greatness with Larry Fedora in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Fedora’s offense allows Carolina to develop and utilize talent like few other programs in all of College Football.

Now I’m not trying to say that UNC will win 10 National Titles, but Carolina needs to realize it has something special and good with Fedora.

And this is something a lot of other teams will come looking for just like Texas did with Brown.

So Carolina, do all of us fans a big favor and lock down Fedora until he wants to retire...

No. 4 - Mandatory Concussion Equipment

4
Courtesy of mc10 and Engadget

As mentioned earlier, technology is changing the world and the game every second of every day...

And it is high time that College Football goes ahead and requires it to be mandatory for all teams on every level. Yes, there are some kinks to work out and some logistical questions to be answered. But the bottom line is the technology is available and the NCAA needs to be using it come August.

There is no perfect arena for this technology to be studied than on a college campus. You have the students, you have the intelligent instructors and you have independent funding to give an unbiased evaluation of the current Concussion Technology. Plus you have some of the brightest young minds able to report and tweak systems in a much more affordable environment as well.

Let’s do the right thing NCAA and make this happen in 2013...

Take the lead on something instead of letting the NFL boss you around like you normally do...

No. 3 - Mark Richt to be Justified as a Legendary Coach

3
Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Listen to this loud and clear fans of the Georgia Bulldogs...

Despite what you believe, you have never, in your history of College Football, had a coach as legendary as Mark Richt...

Not even your beloved Vince Dooley can match what Richt has done...

Dooley amassed a 201-177-10 overall record in 24 years and was 8-10-2 in Bowl Games with one National Title and six SEC Titles. Compare that to Richt who is 118-40 in 12 seasons and is 8-4 in Bowl Games with a pair of SEC Championships and six SEC Eastern Division Titles. Richt also has a pair of National Championship Rings as Offensive Coordinator with the Florida State Seminoles.

No matter what you think as a Georgia fan, you cannot get any better than Richt. There is simply no one out there who is the man and leader on and off the field in the game of football or life.

Plus, if Richt continues on his current path, as a Bulldog fan you can expect around 240 wins against 80 losses, four SEC Championships, 12 Division Titles and possibly a couple of National Titles as his final numbers when all is said and done. All of those will be Georgia records and will clearly distance him from the Dooley discussion.

Just grow up and face it and stand behind a future legend you have now instead of complaining about what you don’t think you have...

Thank you...

No. 2 - The Perfect Job for Houston Nutt

2
John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

So my Mercer Bears will kick off its first football season this September for the first time since 1942. It is an exciting day and we are blessed to have Head Coach Bobby Lamb leading the team back to gridiron glory.

But I’m going to be honest...

I was secretly hoping the day we announced football was coming back Houston Nutt would find his way to Macon, Georgia.

Nutt is an ambassador for the game..

Although it be more the mad professor than the tactical genius...

It is a flat out shame that College Football is going through another season without Nutt roaming the sidelines. It’s simply an injustice of epic proportions. Nutt deserves to be showing the world what it is to be a risk taker and an underdog ready to push a team to greatness.

So I think I have come up with the perfect job...

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels...

Can you imagine Nutt in the glow of Vegas? It would be simply epic on every level. What football coach better embodies the win or lose at all costs better than Nutt? And in VEGAS!!!

And with this new state-of-the-art mecca of a stadium, let’s just go ahead and permanently place the National Championship game under his direct control.

Nutt at UNLV as the ambassador and the Title Game in Vegas would be like Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July all wrapped up into one big perfect package for College Football.

Someone, somewhere, please, please, please make sure this happens...

It is my 40th Birthday after all...

No. 1 - National Title for Dabo Swinney

1
Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

There is simply no one better for the game of College Football than the Clemson Tigers Head Coach Dabo Swinney.

The guy is a class act who walks the fine line of the responsible leader and the rabid fan. Unlike other coaches and their teams around the country, you can see that Swinney loves his players, he love Clemson orange and simply lives and dies on the wins and the losses.

Watching him coach is like playing EA Sports NCAA College Football on the Playstation with your best bud. It’s emotional. It’s comical. It’s just freaking awesome.

And because of his awesomeness, I have declared Swinney as one of the guys in all of college sports that I would personally love to hang out with or take a trip to Vegas. Heck, I bet playing college football or RockBand on the XBox would even be one of the most entertaining nights you could ever have.

Swinney somehow has figured that balance out to be calculated and in complete control while still letting his youthful exuberance shine through.

So while the rest of you are poking Nick Saban to see if he is alive or whether or not you can find that spot that is ticklish to make him smile, I’m going to put all of my birthday wishes for Swinney to run the table, upend the stranglehold of the SEC and dance with his team on as they hoist the final BCS National Championship.

Seriously, can you imagine how awesome and entertaining that post game interview would be on the field with Swinney...

He is the character the game needs...

(Dabo... there’s a good chance I will be at the UNC vs. Clemson Basketball Game tonight... call me and we will have a birthday celebration)
