Nick Saban to Judge Quarterback Competition at Alabama

John David Mercer – USA TODAY Sports

Alabama has scholarship offers out to four prep quarterbacks: DeShone Kizer (Toledo, Oh. Central Catholic), David Cornwell (Normal, Ok. North), Jacob Park (Goose Creek, S.C. Stratford) and Tyler Harris (Blackshear, Ga. Pierce County), but according to Greg Ostendorf at ESPN.com, don’t expect any to commit anytime soon.

The Crimson Tide’s summer camp in June will serve as an audition for the four quarterbacks, but only one of the four is expected to get the offer after they took three quarterbacks in the class of 2013. Cooper Bateman was the headliner in last year’s class, and could be viewed as the heir apparent to incumbent starter AJ McCarron when he graduates after this season.

But before he walks into the starting position at Alabama, a nerve-wrecking tryout will take place to see if any of the aforementioned four recruits have what it takes to be the next member of the Crimson tide.

Cornwell was the first to get the eye of the Alabama staff, and the dual-threat Kizer was the latest. If I were to handicap this race, I would name them as the two front-runners to win the competition in June. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Cornwell is the classic pocket passer that Alabama has had under center during Saban’s tenure, and has a cannon for an arm.

Kizer is the ultimate wildcard in this process, because his skill set is something that Alabama hasn’t had while Saban’s been in Tuscaloosa, but I think that has to intrigue Saban.

Alabama knows they can be deliberate in this process and they don’t need to get out in front of the chase for a prospect. Rather, they can take a wait-and-see approach and let the players sell themselves.

They’ll get that opportunity this June, and I pick Cornwell to emerge as the winner in the competition and commit to Alabama before his senior season.
