Texas Longhorns Make Outstanding Hire in New Director of Player Personnel
The Texas Longhorns football program finally decided to join the growing number of elite college teams around the nation who have decided to bring in a staff member to oversee recruiting. Today, the university announced that they have hired Patrick Suddes to fill the newly-created position of Director of Player Personnel.
Suddes comes to Texas from the Alabama, where he worked under Nick Saban as the Alabama Crimson Tide‘s Associate Director of Football Operations for the last six seasons. Prior to returning to Alabama, his alma mater, Suddes worked with Saban at LSU and the Miami Dolphins.
At the announcement, Suddes told the media:
When I was growing up, The University of Texas was always one of the programs that I thought about as a great place to be because of its tradition and history as a winning program. This is the only job I would have left the Alabama program for. I think being able to grow within a system and building something new here is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
His primary role with the Longhorns will be to oversee all of the Longhorns’ recruiting efforts, as well as coordinate the High School Coaches Clinic and the Texas Football summer camps.
Texas head-coach Mack Brown said that Suddes blew the Texas staff away in his interview:
We are so excited to have Patrick joining our staff. He’s a guy that is very passionate about recruiting and building a team. He has a great deal of experience in recruiting and player personnel both at the college and pro levels. Everyone we talked to said he’s the guy you need, and then Patrick knocked us out in his interview. He’s a very personable guy, but he’s also aggressive and competitive in his approach…I think he’s the perfect fit to build and lead our player personnel department.
This is something that Texas has needed for a very long time, but for whatever reason, they’ve grown a bit complacent in their recruiting efforts of late, falling behind other schools who have already hired a person to oversee recruiting. Known as a recruiting powerhouse, the Longhorns have lost a step (at least by their standards) over the last couple of seasons.
However, the hiring of Suddes should go a long way in getting the Longhorns’ back on track when it comes to signing elite, national talent. Though its too early to see if Suddes will be successful at Texas, to bring in someone who has worked under Saban, one of the best recruiters in the business and the person who has led the charge of late, appears for now to have been the exact thing the Longhorns needed to move forward.
