Last season was a bittersweet affair for the South Carolina Gamecocks. It was a fantastic season, but because of they play in the SEC, it wasn’t good enough. This season, they are counting on Damiere Byrd to help make a good team, great.
The Gamecocks were an 11 win team with just two losses last season. They lost one game to LSU and another to Florida, two powerhouses in within the SEC. No one can look down on them for that, but in order to get over the hump, South Carolina needs players to rise up and reach their potential. Byrd may just be the man to get it done.
Byrd has the potential to be a complete game changer. He has top level speed that you love to see in a receiver, but he also has moves to go with it. This makes him so much more dangerous then the guy that is just fast. It makes him a big-play threat on every possession.
Averaging a shade over 26 yards per reception last season, Byrd has the talent to become a Percy Harvin type superstar. They mirror each other in height, weight, speed and style. It does not take much of an imagination to see Byrd becoming a game-changer in much the same ways Harvin is.
It is just what the Gamecocks need after losing Ace Sanders to the NFL Draft. With Sanders missing from the roster, coach Steve Spurrier will need some of the younger guys to stand out this season if they want to do better than they did last year. It is an opportunity Byrd is not likely to let pass.
